Josh, I've always been amazed by your photography skills. You have a keen eye for catching the perfect angle and lighting. :hatsoff:

Looks great right now, but you make me want to grab a macro lens and dig out my Lego tote.


As for a tripod I went with a cheaper Manfrotto model myself (don't ask me the model # off the top of my head) paid around $160 IIRC at a local camera store. I didn't bother with the carbon fiber. I figured I would take the slight weight penalty for the cost savings since there is a good chance that a tripod in my care could get damaged fairly easily, and I didn't want to be that upset if something did happen to it. I also like the latch style legs over the screw style which is what pushed me to that particular model.

As Stick Figure said above, I also have a Manfrotto aluminum tripod and have no idea what the model number is. It was around the same cost as well. Mine has the clamp style legs, however on my last night-star shoot, I broke one of the clamps and realized that they are non-replaceable on the model of tripod I have. Now, I have a limp tripod (lol) and am on the hook for a new one. I'll be sticking with Manfrotto but thinking of spending a little more this time.

As for tripods, I have a Manfrotto tripod with ballhead collecting dust in my closet (I currently use a Gitzo carbon fiber) if anyone needs a good tripod at a good price. It's in great condition except for a little sand in the joints from a shoot in Hawaii (my girlfriend folded everything up without wiping it down first). I'm sure a little compressed air will make it good as new (the performance is unaffected).

I also have a Manfrotto tripod with both a ballhead and a fluid video head. Love them both. The one you linked is a solid one.

Here are a few I am rather proud of.

I shoot with a D90, and an array of Nikkor lenses. My favorite is the 50mm 1.4 fixed. My favorite effect is bokeh. I would love to have a tilt/shift lens some day.

I have sold a few prints and been paid for a few family portraits. However, it is a hobby for sure.

That is my daughter. She had gotten a farm play set for Christmas and was sitting at the dining room table playing with it.

I was on the other side of the table looking through the door of the barn at her face. Luckily I had my camera at the ready.

The border you see on the left and right is actually the barn. She was on the other side playing with the tractor and the animals.


If I could offer one great piece of advice to anyone new, it is to ALWAYS have your camera. I have caught some amazing shots just because I had my camera. I have also missed some incredible shots when without it.

I mainly use a 50mm 1.8 and just ordered a new lens, which I am stoked about for the 7D!
PP- LR4, version 4.3. If anyone who is attending college, I recommend you taking advantage of Adobe student discount. I picked up LR4 for $40!

And to add, for anyone who is thinking about venturing into a GoPro, I suggest you strongly consider them. For anywhere from $200-$500, depending on which model and version, you can get a kick ass, quality product that snaps a solid 11MP pictures, several burst setting, and the wide angle. On top of taking good pictures, the GoPro shoots great video in 720p, 1080p, 60fps, 30fps, etc. I've put my GoPro through it's paces and it has yet to let me down!

Indeed. I live in the Willamette Valley (Salem & Eugene), but we do the majority of our boating at LBC. I love Central Oregon. We always cruise through Sisters, make sure to stop at Slicks Que.

So I need to waste some space and vent here for second....

Went to the local Cars and Caffeine this morning, packed house started playing around taking some pics and my camera froze....

Turned off, and back on nothing....

Swap battery, okay back on...

slightly pissed that my battery just died from 100%-0 I assume its done

take another pic ... shutter sounds off, like a motor that isn't getting enough current to it type of off.

A few pics later it turns off for good

No more Sony A55

After a bit of research it looks like this isn't a completely uncommon failure and its going to cost around $250-$300 for Sony to fix. The worst part was the average of a month turn around time.

So off to the local camera store I went. I had actually vowed to buy a full frame as my next camera to get the most out of the older Minolta glass that I usually use, but just couldn't drop $3000 at the drop of a hat for the A99.

I had to "settle" for an A77 which specs out pretty damn well. I'm still a little bitter about needing to spend $1200 today when I wasn't at all expecting it, but I had my new bag on order and it will be in Tuesday so I can't very well have a brand new bag with no camera to put in it .. right?

I'm going to go play with my new toy and will have some photos for everyone before too long.
