I swear I typed a post looking for opinions on how wide of a wide angle you need, but I already made a decision and spent some $'s so I guess it doesn't matter that my post vanished. I will attempt to post a couple of pics from the new lens this week sometime.

What did you end up getting? I would say conventional thinking is that 24mm is wide enough for most situations.

My iPhone 4S broke beyond repair, so I bought a 5.

I'm on the Big Island of Hawaii for the next ten days.

So I'm switching off between the 5 and my Nikon D90.

What did you end up getting? I would say conventional thinking is that 24mm is wide enough for most situations.

On a full frame I would agree! However on my old crop-body, I often found I wanted more width than 24mm.

Here are a couple shots of the Jet Star Roller Coaster. The coaster fell into the Atlantic Ocean after being ripped from its pier during Hurricane Sandy. They're going to be starting the removal process very shortly. This is in Seaside Heights, NJ.

Hey guys I've been thinking of getting in to photography as another hobby, what would be the best combo for a total beginner. money is kind of tight so i will most likely get my setup used.

I started with a d40x with 18-55 & 70-200mm lenses, got it from eBay for $300 shipped, probably more like $200 by now. It's only 10MP but I have a 24x20(ish) photo print hanging on my wall that was actually cropped down a bit. So it should print large enough for a beginner without dropping a lot of coin in case you don't want. Maybe a d3000 or 3100 would be the equivalent now.

I now have a D5000 which you could pick up for not a lot more. They're both a few years old models but until I'm getting paid for my pics I don't wanna invest too much in it. And for my use the APS-C sized sensor is more than large enough and doesn't get in the way of activities (biking, hiking, etc.).

Canon (and others) makes equivalent models if you care to argue brands.

D40 is even older than D40X so don't confuse the two. Still not a bad camera but it's 6 or 8 MP I believe.

Exactly right. My new camera is crop sensor my camera that is off for repair is also crop sensor. Most of my glass is from older film cameras, so the widest good lens I had was 28mm. My choice was between a 20mm prime and the 16-80 Zeiss. The 20mm was a couple hundred cheaper and had a better aperture but in the end I bought the Zeiss. I figured the extra range would cause less lens changes and the focus was much quicker than most of the early 80's Minolta glass I normally use so I can take advantage of the constant focus ability of the A77.

Hopefully it was the right choice.

Well, I'd say if you put half the focus and energy into it as you do in your other hobby, you'll be a pro in no time!

What's your thought with it? Do you see yourself getting more into it (ie more invested in it) as you go? I think a good start is actually to get a smaller higher end point and shoot. Maybe even something like the Canon G11. We can chat about it sometime.

I'm more in it for picture collection ie: i have no intention of it being sold or seen even. I care more about the end result of the picture Not what gear i use. If i find a setup i lke i'll more likely stay with it. The term "SLR" is very new to me, i just know that if you want to get into photographjy you need to get yourself a digital SLR camera.
