So... I need your help deciding something...

For sale locally is a Canon Rebel EOS XS/1000D DSLR outfit.

The seller is asking $350 cash... I'm sorely tempted to pick it up, even though I don't really have the money. I don't see a big use for it now, and I'm not sure I would see a huge difference in the way I shoot between this camera and my Canon Powershot SX260 HS...

Thoughts guys?

Canon Rebel EOS XS/1000D DSLR outfit. Can go fully automatic or fully manual. Includes Canon 18-55mm EF-S IS lens as well as 55-250mm EF-S IS Zoom lens. Also included is Polaroid filter set including: Fluorescent, Circular and UV filters. Battery and charger included. Uses an SD card. In terrific shape – has totally been babied. Only selling because my wife's
upgraded to a pro-level DSLR.

You need to know what you want to do with it before we can help with that.
What cameras & video cameras do you already have, etc.. blah blahh

There are a lot of 4/3 camera on sale for that price. Or save your money and buy a DLSR that takes 1080 video etc...

I have a Canon 40D I want to sell it myself. So for me I don't see a reason to buy an older DLSR unless you had a specif reason.

like you:
you have kids and want a DSLR to take fast photos ( much better tha 4/3)
your the next adam ansel and want to take landscape photo
your uncle/cousin has a canon and you can share lenses
you have a hobby you to take pictures of (car shows/rock climbing)

If it is going to be your only camera for just taking snap shots I would probably get something else. I hate lugging around my 40D. I am only doing now because I am taking a photo class ( now it is fun ). Before the photo class I probably only ever brought it out five times a year. The rest of the time I used my P&S camera.

As I already mentioned, I have a point and shoot Canon Powershot SX260 HS. It's an awesome camera and does what I want right now...

Dang, those are nice photos. I think you already know the answer if you take landscape photos This hobby is going to get real expensive. hahaha

Depending on how often you go you might just want to rent a full frame camera and lens.


If you do landscape and blow up photos large you are going to want a nice camera and lens.

Yeah, I don't know what the answer is, seems like you do? I'm not sure this Rebel will be much of an upgrade, the MP is less (10 on the SLR) than my P&S (12)...

Don't get caught up too much in the mp's. You need to compare the sensors. That's going to be where you find the difference.

I don't know enough about the sensors and all. I feel like I don't need the DSLR now...

Basically, I guess I'm asking people to tell me if this is a good deal for a first time SLR, and if it is worth it, or if I should keep my money...

Your photos are very nice. I have only taking photography for two quarters. I don't know really know much at all.

What I have read ( no real experience ) if you to sell them/blow them up

landscape == full frame camera / tripod / excellent lens

If you just want to post on facebook/flikr print 4x6 to 8x10 the camera you listed should be fine.

Rebel XS doesn't have spot metering. For me that's a big deal.

If you're looking at used Canons, I'd look for a 50D body, instead.

I'm oversimplifying it, but the larger the sensor, the more info your camera is able to get. So, if you like shooting landscapes, all the subtle details in your shots would come out that much more.

Clouds are a good example. If you've got a partly cloudy sky, where looking at them with your naked eye, you see a ton of detail in them. Shooting that on a P&S vs say an FX camera will be night and day results.

While do I agree with this it is not so noticeable on the web or print 4x6.

but yeah if you make poster or larger print NIGHT & DAY difference.

The pictures on a large print look soooo different than even a good large monitor.

If you spent a whole weekend driving/camping to get that perfect shot I would say your time would have been wasted with a P&S camera.

I can't afford either. Too high end, for me to start with, I would need a lot more smaller, less expensive things, before I buy a full-frame.

no, no that is HUGE upgrade over p&s.

What I am trying to convey ( not very well ) is what is your time worth? If you and wife go on vacation and see a nice sunset and want to capture the memory any camera is great for that.

If you want to sell ( blow up large, with great detail ) and say you take three days off and travel 1000 miles for that perfect spot, with sun just so I would want a full frame camera. Just rent if you can't afford. That is what I do.

Your shots are better than mine. I am just a hack/hobby guy. I will never be able to sell my junk. It is just for fun for me.

Have you considered taking an online photo class? That is what I am doing. I am local to the school, but I would say half the students are all over the place. Last quarter there was a young lady taking the class from Paris! It was great when she shared her photos.

lol, I'm a hobby photographer myself, I don't shoot all that much, just when I see something I like... If it turns out, then it does!

I don't take pictures of people or do candid shots much, I shoot almost 90% landscapes or stuff with background landscapes. (like 4Runners )

You are correct the rebel is not a full frame camera neither is my canon 40D.
Full frame == big bucks.

You can rent everything from body lens combo. Just a frame or just lens.

This hobby is a slippery slope of money/time:madgrin:


I have not priced used equipment that much to tell how could of deal that is.
When I want to research the going rate for something I go to ebay click on the item I want and then click "watch item". Wait for the item to sell. Since you saved it in watch item you can click on it to see what it "SOLD FOR". Not asking price, etc..

Thanks [MENTION=47554]t4r4life[/MENTION]! I have to give most of the credit to my environment, it is hard to take a bad shot! You should come out and visit, if you can go to Asia, then you can come to Yellowstone!

It seems that I can get the body + the regular/smaller lens for around $180-$250 ISH... So the filters (worth anything?) and the zoom lens I would be paying for. So not a screamin' deal right now.

Guy is asking $350... I should talk him down a bit.
