Since it's that time of year, does anyone have any fireworks photos, or tips for photographing fireworks?

Tripod, slow shutter (so preferably a remote shutter release) and low ISO. If you want to get really fancy, take a pic with no fireworks and then stack them later.
Sorry, no fireworks pics from me. Was too busy lighting them off.

Here are some that I took this past 4th. As for tips, I'm sure there are others here with much more experience and can offer more in depth advice. I'd start with a tripod, small aperture setting, long exposure, low ISO, manual focus, turn off Image Stabilization if you have it.

i shot a wedding last weekend and here are my 2¢:
what i had with me: my t1i with a hot-shoe flash gun and a little slip on diffuser.
the set-up was "okay." i wasn't too happy with the pictures. mostly because i hate direct flash.
what i wish i had:
• a flash bracket which allows you to offset your flash.
• a bigger diffuser (see below).
• a few softboxes, triggers, and more flash guns.
• an assistant or two.
my dream setup would probably be this example (except with a canon):
i don't particularly care to shoot weddings, but money talks. if you don't see yourself getting too into it i would just scout around for a local camera shop that rents out equipment. save a few, make a few.

hey guys ive been researching some entry level DSLR's mainly the nikon D3200(anybody have this one?thoughts?). I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for any other entry level DSLRs, I don't know that much about photography and the specs involved except from megapixel count but want to get into it. I love taking pictures but i am looking for something more that just my iphone.

Just a bit of advice. You would love the results of a circular polarizer filter if you take a lot of landscape shots. Another option for shots like these where the ground and sky are very different in terms of exposure, would be a graduated neutral density filter which would have darkened the sky a bit leaving the lower half alone. Photoshop has sort of built in "grad ND filters"....but it's no where near the same results as if you had taken the shot with the filter on the lens.

I'm pretty new to the DSLR world, but it seems to me that Nikon is a pretty solid choice (I tend to prefer Canon for point and shoot and other compacts for their menu functionality though). I think it comes down to how much you're willing to spend, but I was told it's a pretty big jump in performance going from the 3200 to the 7000... the price jumps too though. If you like taking pictures and haven't really used a camera other than the iPhone, it's probably best to stick at the 3200 to learn all the controls like ISO, aperature, shutter speed, etc... I started out with a Canon S90 and learned a lot with that. Either way, get a decent camera that allows these controls and just start playing around and learning - it is a ton of fun!

Two general questions here...
What type of Monitor do you guys use? As evidenced by my recent picture post, the monitor I'm currently using at home (my LCD tv connected via HDMI to an older Macbook) cannot be calibrated well enough. At home, the pic looks dialed in terms of color and lighting; at work, it looks like the greens are almost neon and the lighting is all sorts of bad. Not sure if any monitor would do or if there are some better than others for photo editing.
Does anyone use Nikon's Capture/View NX2 software? It is TERRIBLY slow on my computer (I meet the hardware requirements) and before I spend money on Capture NX2 or Lightroom, I'd like some input as to which y'all prefer.

I personally shoot on Nikon, but our work is mainly done on Canon's. You really can't go wrong with either platform. Just keep in mind that once you choose one, it's a bit harder to make a switch as you start building your lens collection. Do any of your friends have DSLR's? If so, having one that matches their lenses might be helpful as you could borrow them from time to time.

Keep in mind that a lot of the photo hosting programs degrade the photo when you load it. I personally use either my retina MacBook Pro or my iMac.
I never use the NX software. Lightroom. But I am considering a switch to Aperture.
