Well okay then, I just picked up my first "real" camera, some still might not call it real, because its a mirrorless Panasonic. Anyway i was looking for the best places to read up on photography basics regarding the proper ways of using, aperture settings, exposure settings, RAW vs JPEG, etc. ...I'm pretty tempted to buy a Photography for Dummies book but wasn't sure if that would be wasted money versus an online resource.

Thanks and once this deployment is over i'll be posting truck photos again! Better than ever.

I think that largely depends on you and how you learn. I am a hands on learner. I learn by doing. I'm also a visual learner, so watching a video is more effective than reading a book. I do own several books on photography and lighting and have found them very useful resources as well. Just have to pick the avenue that suits you best.

If you have Kindle just download samples for them to see if they're your style. I got the Kelby books on sale and found there was a lot I skipped over because I won't be doing studio or portrait photography.

Also tons of good stuff on YouTube, though a lot of it is by people who don't know how to present/teach very well so some can be difficult to sit through.

I have been shooting for almost 15 years now. Your constantly learning and evolving and that's all part of the fun. Like [MENTION=56396]Hepar[/MENTION] said, I like to learn hands on and by doing. In our digital age (without film) its so easy to take a photo, look at the screen, evaluate, and try again to see the changes.

That being said I own several photography textbooks that I have acquired over the years which I have bought from Chapters (equivalent of your Barns and Nobles I think...). I would go there and grab one that looks appealing. Most will cover the basics to get you rolling. If you have any specific questions you can ask in here as I am sure it will help others out as well. Or shoot me a PM anytime!

And looks like a good option. Personally though, if I were wanting to backup important information be it video, photo etc etc, I would want to see that it worked. Can it connect to your iPad with a USB drive connected to it so you can see if the info is on there?

I'd say if you plan on keeping the cards with the info on them, then making sure they transfer is a little less important. Do you have a good shockproof/waterproof case for your cards? If not, I'd get one of those.

But I also have a camera that uses both CF and SD cards, so it's nice to be able to put both in the same case.

It's called have a little common courtesy for other forum members. I always make sure to resize my photos to an appropriate size before posting them, usually around 1024x768 or less. There's no need for posting pictures at 4000x6000 resolution that will completely through off the formatting on the page for people and make it a complete nightmare on small screens and mobile devices.

If you want someone to see the big picture then post up a link to the full size one.

Thank you for at least providing some sort of tangible action to correct the issue, but this has nothing to do with the resolution of the photos. The forum decided to set my pics side by side in lieu of stacking them.

example:

I'd say the biggest destroyer of cards (outside of actual breakage) is moisture. If you're in areas where say you're camping overnight, condensation and moisture can be an issue. Having your cards in a watertight enclosure will ensure that they stay dry. Plus, those cases can take quite a beating too.

what about this device? it looks like a nice alternative. has the SD card reader and i can transfer to a USB Thumb drive. USB drives are cheap and small. plus its portable and will also charge my devices.

I looked at a few devices like this, and while their functionality seems to be pretty solid, I personally, am more apt just bring my laptop (+ external HDD for backup of raw masters) along, so that I can do PP on my pix at the end of the day while unwinding.

I will take a more detailed look at the device on Friday morning and reply again with my thoughts (and/or additional devices of similar ilk).
