Road-Trip 2014

After a fantastic photo shoot for a Resort client in Telluride the first weekend in October, I returned home to Denver for a short 2-1/2 days of preparation, then on 08 October at 3pm, I headed out for what would be a road trip that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. The details of the trip can be found on Road-Trip 2014 Part-I, Road-Trip 2014 Part-II and Road-Trip 2014 Part-III of my Blog. Since this is a Photography Forum, I’ll share out pictures from the trip, which spanned 25 days, 26 states and 7,731 miles.

Thanks Chris! The road-trip was absolutely amazing! Racked up a ton of miles on my 4Runner (not even 4 mos old and it has 16,284 miles on the odometer).

But, I bought it to use it and it is serving its' purpose quite well.

I need some camera recommendations. I have a DSLR and a cell phone. I go on a lot of outdoor adventures and I like taking pictures so I'm looking for a happy medium.

I want a small pocketable point and shot, good picture quality, reasonable optical zoom, auto focus and image stability, but most importantly durability. It'll go mountain biking, hiking, skiing, etc. The skiing is kind of a big deal because it'll be exposed to slight moisture and very cold conditions. Having a cell phone in an outside pocket of my ski coat it'll get cold enough that it crashes and turns off, if I keep it in an inside pocket it stays warmer but it will physically be damp on the surface from the moisture wicking clothes pulling sweat away from the body.

Any suggestions?

One big sacrifice to the "rugged" line of cameras are picture quality. I had one of the Olympus tough series cameras and I found I rarely used it because I really was never happy with the the pictures that came out of it. It was an older version though and I see the tech is getting better.

Not sure if the size will be a deal breaker, but one camera that wasn't mentioned in the above review was the Nikon AW1. I think it has the best quality out of any weather proof camera, but it is a bit bigger in size.

The size isn't necessarily a deal breaker but that price absolutely is. I know I will never get top quality out a rugged point and shoot but it will be used in situations that I currently just use my cell phone's camera for. I'm hoping to spend $250-$325ish.

I've been meaning to share a few of these, took them at the first of the month. We got snowed in with no power and trees all over the roads just outside of Gatlinburg at a place called Cobbly Nob. I wasn't prepared for the weather so I was limited to shooting right around the cabin but it was still pretty. These were taken the day after the snow when the sun came back out.

All taken with D7100 and Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4C

The vibrant foliage and snow were really spectacular, wish I'd had proper clothing to explore.
