I was playing around with my 70-200L today. I haven't used my DSLR in a while. Canon t4i Pt Mugu Naval air show practice.

i had a busy weekend of astro photography thanks to the moonless nights.
thought I would share a couple

this first one wasn't one of my brightest ideas. I drove up to the mtns here in CO by myself and decided to try a new road I have never been on. then hike a trail I have never hiked before all in complete darkness. the trail is only 3/4 mile long but it is not marked very well and I had a few 'oh sh**' moments. I thought I had my camera facing directly north but looks like north was off to the left a little.

this was taken at echo lake, 10,600', on the way up to Mt Evans. its a 20" exposure at ISO 1250 f/2.8. I took over an hour of trails this night but still working on that

Anyone know if the G1x mk2 is a good camera?

I need something to stuff in my duffel bag when I travel and my DSLR is too big.

I see that it has the 1.5" sensor (not an APS-C, but close).

Opinions are welcome.

Seems to be "okay" though I do think there may be other options that are more suitable such as the Sony a6000 (this coming from a Canon shooter).

Here is a shot of the recent 'super-blood-moon' just after moonrise in the Arizona desert. I used a camera mounted flash on the train and the moon is the natural exposure.

Can I get some help with my night shots? I was using a pretty high f-stop, around 7-10 usually, is that bad? I understand you obviously want a lot of light in but sometimes the camera can't auto focus (or auto focus on what I want) and I'm not sure how to accurately manual focus it without taking 30 photos and adjusting each time--so I figured if I just crank the aperture closed it would help keep everything in focus. I assume this is the wrong way to go about it though.

And on a photo like this last one, I don't want the background super bright but there's obviously very little light on the truck. Do I have to artificially light it up with a flash light or something? Or is there a way to pull in enough light without over exposing the background?

I looked at the G1x too when I was looking for a travel camera or one when I didn't want to carry my DSLR around. I agree. Everything about it was OK. Nothing about it blew me away. I ended up with the Panasonic LX100 and LOVE it. It came down to that or the Sony RX100. Just liked a few of the features better than the Sony. I hear the latest version of the RX100 is pretty amazing though.

I'm definitely not the go to guy here on night shots, but here's a few tips of what I do know. MF is a must. Your lenses should have an infinity focus, which will be closest to focus on the stars. If you're trying to focus on something else closer but are having trouble because of low light, use the live view and zoom in as much as you can to what you're focusing on. Then you can really fine tune your focus. Also, I could be wrong but if you're shooting shots with something in the foreground as well as the night stars, the only way to truly get both in focus is to take two separate photos and stack them.

* Fill flash
* If a long enough exposure (a few seconds) use a flashlight to briskly "paint" the vehicle.
* If on a tripod, over and underexpose (bracket) 2-3 shots and combine in Photoshop.
* If all else fails, use shadow recovery in Photoshop, sometimes you can pull an amazing amount of image from what appears to be very dark areas depending on camera or RAW vs JPG shooting.
* Use the full moon as a light source!

All of those are very common for night shoots

These photos look sweet y'all.

I'm in a Photography class in school and it is way more intricate than I thought. I've always taken the pictures for my family on trips and what not but artistic photography is hard. One thing I've learned is that a lot is set up (portraits and still life's). Way more preparation than I imagined. My dad has a Nikon D90 so I can get some nice practice with a DSLR but the cameras on these new phones aren't half bad either, haha.

Well, then I guess I came to the right place to ask! Currently I'd say I do 70% of my work in Lightroom, 25% in Photoshop and 5% in Illustrator. I'm a lefty (highly doubt that matters, but figured it couldn't hurt to know). Any thought or recommendations? Currently I was looking at the Intuos Photo. Just don't think I need all of the features of the other pads. Are there features on other models that you think I would miss?
