A few of us in the 3rd gen section were talking camera gear and photos in the picture thread. Thought we could start a "general" serious photography thread where people can post pictures they've taken (doesn't have to be 4Runner related either), get feedback, talk camera gear, techniques, and processing software. Pretty much anything goes....

EDIT: Takin' heat for my cell phone comment..... Great photos can be taken with cell phones and I've even got some with my terrible quality iphone 4. I simply wanted to try and keep this thread more of an in-depth discussion of photography, it's principles, techniques, as well as critiquing each others work if your open to it.

I'll start.

I recently stepped into the full-frame world and also made the jump to RAW files and upgraded to Lightroom 4. I've always found the size of RAW files to be a drawback for me and I've had pretty good results with high-quality JPEG's on my old Rebel XSi. However, after getting spendy on my new Canon 6D body, I felt it would be a sin to NOT shoot in RAW. Needless to say, in the short time I've been playing with the new camera, I am rapidly falling in love with RAW files and the full-frame body. Post processing is WICKED with RAW.

I downloaded a couple plugins for Lightroom, one of which is 3 levels of instant HDR goodness. Here's a photo from today that I used the HDR plugin on:

I have been shooting with a T5i mostly. I too made a recent jump to RAW after seeing the Lightroom advantages. I now use 64 GIG cards too to compensate the file size. Its winter right now so the whites are throwing off my color grading, but this summer I am definitely looking forward to seeing the advantages to RAW format with green foliage

Last year Black Friday i bought my Nikon D750. This year i bought a DJI Mavic Air drone.

I've been shooting the D750 for over a year now, and I'm constantly impressed with the cameras capabilites. I plan on upgrading to the D850 later this year, but will keep the 750 as a back up. Too nice of a camera to get rid of!

I have a chance to buy the retail US version of Sony A7iii with 24-70mm F4 kit ($2,800 - $2,900) for $700 off. Should I do it?

I definitely won't be buying anything like that until this economy roller coaster settles down a bit. Perhaps in Feb I'll pull the trigger if everything smooths out.

I'm considering getting the a7iii with 24-70 F/4 lens to start with and then later this year getting the Batis 18mm once it goes on sale again.

Nice thread! Yeah, if you plan on doing any sort of post-photo editing, shooting in RAW is a must. I also work in Lightroom 4 and love it. I shoot mainly product stuff for the photo side of our work, but enjoy shooting climbing the most (since it's what I enjoy doing the most)

Old post, I know, but I really like these shots, especially the fourth one with the darkened background and illuminated climber. Great use of flash and vignetting. Nice angles with the tree trunks too.

for those who use flickr, what are your thoughts of them being taken over and the new fees?

i have the same issue, i get it right on my laptop. then when i post online and see it from my phone or another PC it looks off. mostly shows up darker than i see on my PC. i did the color monkey screen calibration on laptop but i might need to redo it again.
i use the histogram in LR and PS so i dont get why its so much darker. maybe my save functions

Color calibration is actually a big deal if you want your colors to be accurate. I find editing on a laptop to be difficult. Typically the screens are not very color or gamma accurate and are a pain to calibrate properly, if at all. Connecting the laptop to an IPS monitor that encompasses as much of the sRGB color space as possible (above 95%, preferably 100%) then calibrating with the Colormunki will do wonders.

The other thing to keep in mind is that it's almost impossible to edit any image and have it look the same on all the computer monitors out there. We just can't account for all the screen types, most of which have never been calibrated once they left the factory. The best we can do is ensure that we at least are working on a color calibrated system ourselves.

And for the most consistent results, monitors really need to be calibrated regularly and often...like every 1-3 weeks depending on the monitor. My new photo editing monitor needs re-calibrating about every 2-3 weeks. My old monitor would start drifting badly within a few days.

Thanks. Again, wished I had remembered my remotes so I could have hid the flash behind the tree, but it still turned out ok. Was also taken in the middle of a sunny summer day too.

Yeah, but it's close enough to the subject that it's not too distracting. If you had placed it far right, then perhaps that might not have worked out as well.
