does anyone use a sky tracker for their astro-photography? i had never heard of one until recently and im a little intrigued by them. it would def help with lower noise milky way shots.

Sky trackers are more useful when doing super-long exposures. Milky Way shots are typically going to be 15-30 seconds in duration (my experience). Now if you are doing a milky way panorama, the sky tracker may come in handy, but the cost would still be hard to justify (at least for me).

that is how i am doing MW shots now, 30" sec exposures at higher ISO. doing some research/checking with the sky tracker i have seen exposures up to 2mins on the MW at lower ISO. much crisper shot with a lot less noise and more detail. it could open the door to other astro-photography as well for me.

I typically shoot MW at:
Focal Length: ~18-20mm
ISO: 2000-2500
Exposure Time: 20-25 sec

(keeping in mind focal length/500 for max exposure time as a general rule).

Also make sure Long Exposure Noise Reduction is OFF (especially if you shoot in raw).

thats how i do it as well [MENTION=112332]USKTog[/MENTION] , i am on 16mm so i step it up to the full 30". ISO varies, i try to stay under 2000 if possible. i need to start doing more image stacking for foreground

which GoPro did you get? they all come waterproof. even the new 6 & 7 in the black case(as long as you have all of the doors closed). i have a floaty door for my 4. it saved my ass in Aruba. my 6 i usually have a handle with a wrist bracelet to keep it from floating away. i cant believe they haven't figured out a way yet to make them float.

i purchased this for snorkeling in Mexico using my 6. its pretty awesome and gets better under water pictures. it is fragile though so be careful of the front cover. and also you cant see the screen at all so kind of shooting blind

i bought some extra batteries cause you will need them.

i have a gorilla pod for most all uses. it is only 'resistant' and not recommended to go in salt water. for that i use their 3 way tripod .

this case is awesome. holds 2 GoPros easily and all of my cables, battery chargers, extra batteries. its small and compact and doesn't scream steal me.

I am just starting to get into photography and finally got a decent lens.

A couple of years ago on Veterans' Day I lucked into this image up at Pismo Beach. I cannot remember where I dumped the RAW file, so this is the lightly touched up jpg. I need to get and learn to use Lightroom.

I'm truly learning from the beginning so if anyone has a good place they recommend to learn the basics, I'm all ears. Thanks.

i have these batteries https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B..._asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1&tag=viglink20350-20 for my 6. they should work with your 7 as well. they work pretty good, i've been using them for a year now. they last about as long as the GoPro brand. the charger is nice too so you can charge 3 at a time. i just make sure to cycle through each battery, when one dies i charge it and grab another instead of constantly charging/using same battery

I have a friend who is an electrical engineer and has been working on the development of an all electric line of boats, so he definitely has become very familiar with batteries. He scared me off getting any sort of knock-off brand of battery (caveat that there are some third-party suppliers that do have a good reputation). He said early on in his work, his company was curious on the quality of some of the Chinese batteries. They bought a bunch and tested them as well as ripped them apart. They said a few of them were decent, but that the overwhelming number of them were POS as well as having fake UL certs.

Depending on how you're using your gopro, you should be able to charge from a separate battery pack with the usb port while shooting. I do this with the 5. Obviously this won't work if you're doing underwater work, etc. But wanted to mention it

Exactly this... after reading some of the reviews, saying that it froze their camera etc.. Thats what scares me.

That's what i'm looking for but a trusted brand. I guess GoPro it is, sadly. $50 is quite a bit for battery nd charger.

I quit buying GoPro years ago. Their stuff is so overpriced.

I have many DBPOWER 4K cameras from Amazon. They are ripoffs but work as good if not better. A 4K camera is $60.

For batteries I prefer the Wasabi. I have not had one fail yet. They work on the even cheaper 1080P cameras and the 4K ones.
