Hello,
This is my 3rd post, and I figured I should introduce myself and my rig. Some folks here know me from a couple other forums, where I am PHOTOG.

We are living in Washington; but were raised in Arizona. We get out as often as we can (not often enough), and use our 4Runner as a daily driver, photo gear hauler, for camping, fishing, hunting, etc.

Here are some pics of the rig.

Best shift knob I have ever used

Scion T1806 w/ iPod cable

Cockpit - Garmin 276C, Mini Magnum CB, added center-dash speaker for CB, 80GB iPod in worthless tray space

Black Widow roof basket, Hi Lift & Shovel

Me

Mileage as of August 2008 (4 years old). 25k / year. 8 more years before I get a new engine!

I shoot a Canon 1D MkII Digital SLR. The Nikon & Canon users like to poke fun at each other; but I would not have any problem using Nikon equipment.

The two "platforms" are from Case Logic. Here is a link to the specific item. I picked them up at Best Buy.

Thanks. My rig really isn't modded very much. I try to keep things understated, when possible. There are some other mods I would like to do: Skid plates, Shrockworks bumper, winch, rear tire and fuel carrier, side awning, fridge, ......

I do have rock sliders now, just have not posted the pics yet.

Currently running the 275/70R17 GY Silent Armor (32x11.00x17).
Also running the SpiderTrax spacers (adapters).

I can run anything from the 255/75R17 to the 285/70R17, with the lift and trim I have.

I have not tried it yet. I looked at a number of other threads and forums, and I think it will fit. Tight fit. Close to the sway bar.

Not too worried about a full size spare if you bust one off roading?

The difference in diameter between the 275/70R17 and the factory tire is marginal. Since I have the V6, and 2WD is an option, my plan has been to place the spare at the front, and use 2WD on the highway, to get to a tire shop.

On dirt roads, it would not make one bit of difference.

Having said that, when I change tires next next month, I will be buying 5 tires. The spare will be a 255/75R17. This is very close to my 275/70R17 diameter, and it is narrow enough to stay tucked up where it belongs.

With that, I will feel comfortable with any tire from 255/75R17 through 285/70R17.

On the 4Runners, I'm not sure the ATRAC is agressive enough to notice a tire that is 0.6" shorter than the others. If you run with low pressure in one tire, your ATRAC does not start activating.

I now have a BFG M/T 255/75R17 as the spare. It fits with no problems, and is the same diameter as my 275/70R17's. There is less than 0.1" difference when these tires are new. My 275's have 50,000 miles on them, so they are probably a little smaller than my spare, for now. I may go to the 255/75R17 tire, for my next full set.

Since they are virtually the same size, why not just put a 275/70/17 as your spare so it matched? (Other than the fact you might go to the MT's for your next set)
