A couple weeks ago I got my Pioneer ND-BC8 backup camera finally installed on my '97 SR5. This is a great $100 camera—not amazing at night, but I really like the minimal aesthetic impact. It's subtle and not clunky like so many license plate cameras. I also managed to install the camera in a central location without drilling any holes into the tailgate or covering/blocking either of the license plate lights.
With a coat hanger, I fished the cable up behind the left license plate light and through into the tailgate cavity. I loosened the whole license plate assembly and pried it up slightly with a panel tool in order to create the space needed to fish the cable through. Here are a couple of photos of the finished product. I really like how it turned out.
