PIAA 520 lights: fuse needed?

Hi all,

I installed a pair of piaa 520's using the install kit that comes with it. However, the kit did not include a fuse, only a relay. Do I need to also put a fuse in this circuit? I figure since it came from PIAA prewired they would have taken care of this, but I didn't want to just assume.

My 580s don't have a fuse from the battery either, just the relay box. I didn't put a fuse in because the instructions didn't say to; they've worked fine for about 3 years and I use them often.

a 20 amp fuse is all u need before the relay, should be like ring terminal from battery-----------------------fuse--------------------relay-------lights.

^ That's how my Hellas are.

I guess if the PIAA kit didn't come with one, then you don't really need it.

A couple dollars and a couple minutes for peace of mind is worth it regardless of the instructions. If you've ever seen the damage caused when a wire bursts into flames you would add a fuse.

It depends where you get your power from. If you run a wire directly off the battery you should use a fuse (which is what i'm assuming the install kit said to do). In my previous car I was able to get power from an unused 15 amp fuse terminal in my main fuse block. It was there for some factory optional equipment I didn't have.

just called PIAA and they said that there is a fuse included in the relay housing. If the fuse breaks, you just send back the relay for a new one (they have a lifetime warranty).

Makes sense; I figured PIAA would be smart enough not to completely overlook putting a fuse in a preassembled installation kit.

I don't like that design though. If it does blow, then you can't use your lights for probably a week and a half. With Hellas design you can just throw a new fuse in and you're good to go.
