Pic of TPS throttle position sensor

Hey guys, so i think my TPS is going out... I thought it could have been the MAF or the plugs and wires, or even the fuel filter... But all of those are brand new and fine... My engine still trembles at low throttle and idle, and even at higher speeds 50-60 it sputters before it smooths out! The check engine light is NOT on...

So I need to see a pic of where this sensor is at so that I can check the connection and make sure its not shot, I have a 98 4Runner SR5...

eddie if it is the TPS there is one for sale now on denvers craiglist.... auto parts. brand new

I am not affiliated-just noticed it yesterday.

Bump for this thread. I have the same stutter and low idle and would also like to know the location of the TPS. Thanks.

your tps sensor is going to be on the throttle body. on the back of it. it faces the fire wall. if your looking at the engine from the front of truck it is directly oppisite of the throttle cables and springs.

thanks guys, I looked at it and its not bad, and the throttle body just got cleaned... I think I am going to clean the ISC, thanks for the help again

and how did you "look" at it to determine that it wasnt bad? Your o2 sensor may be bad.

Ummm... I unscrewed it and took it off! haha, how else would I check it?!? It could be the O2, but that CEL code came back with a misfire on cylinder 1. No other cylinders were in error, so Im pretty much banking on that fuel injector... But I'll let you know after the diagnostic and see if it gets confirmed...

Ok....if you seriously think this is the way to check out a TPS, immediately close your hood, and seek the help of a professional, you do not posess the mechanical aptitude to even change your own oil. If you are a true mechanic, you will TEST sensors instead of just changing stuff out, and hoping that was the problem. BTW, i thought you said that your vehicle was not producing any codes at all?
TESTING

1FZ-FE Engine

Measure the Throttle Position (TP) sensor resistance1FZ-FE engine
Detach the throttle position sensor connector.
Apply vacuum to the throttle opener.
Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between each terminal.
If the resistance is not as specified, replace the throttle position sensor. To check proper resistance, go to this link

take it easy bro, just being a little sarcastic... dont get defensive... No, here is the story... my CEL came on the monday, with the symptoms of a hard idle at starting/ stop lights and a chugging when accelerating... The code from the computer came back as a misfire in cylinder 1... so went through the usual suspects... spark plugs, wires, coils, even swapped coils to see if it would change cylinders, nope... plugs are new NGK platinums and the wires are fairly new. But the weird thing is that this hard idle and stuttering/chugging sensation out of the engine is not a full time issue, very intermittent... It will start rough and later the truck will run so smooth you wouldnt even know there was a problem. So I checked the fuel filter and it was definitely due for a change, all the fuel came out as brown as mud, tons of dirt.... That still didnt solve it, so I went to the MAF and throttle body, just to check and noticed some carb buildup, but the cleaning didnt get rid of it. Then the last issues I could think of are the ISC or the TPS and both of these checked out to be good on the readings. So last suspect would be the fuel injector, so I am checking the resistance on that.... So there ya go brotha, theres the whole story in a nut shell... So yeah no hard feelings on my earlier response back to you!

no hard feelings man, just trying to be of some assistance. you kind of came across as not knowing much about vehicles since you posted up a thread asking for pics to where the TPS was. i just kind of figured you really didnt know how to test it. i was also being somewhat sarcastic also.

thats cool man, trust I'll admit it when I dont know how to fix something, especially when it comes to my trucks sensors, but when it comes to the basic maintenance or swapping faulty parts, then I have a little more knowledge... I had my cert. mechanic friends run the test for me at the warehouse I work at, they couldnt find anything, so thats why the truck right now is with the dealer : ( It took me a whole week to succomb to the big bad toy dealer, cuz like I said this problem is so hit and miss that i need them to work their magic.... Even this morning when I took it in, the CEL was off and I never felt more confident in my 4Runner! So yeah Ill let you know what the end result is...

Hey scott the problem was the cylinder 1 injector!!!!! cost me some $400 to get one fixed! But the Runner is purring like a kitten and the tech at the dealer said everything else is in top shape! So I guess I'll save some money for the other 5 injectors and keep it set aside for now... Thanks for the help

glad you got it sorted out eddie!

Yes, many thanks for the solve report, very helpful!!

New to this forum and happy to have found this thread as I'm having pretty much the exact same problem (except my misfire is on Cyl 2). This started about 2 years ago, lasted for a few days and stopped, came back 2-3 times since then, only lasting for a day or two at the most then went away completely.

Like others with this problem, I've also changed wires and plugs, swapped coils around, etc. All to no avail. Right now the 4Runner has been running constantly rough, all speeds, for over a week now so I think I've crossed over the intermittent threshold to a constant problem.

I'm wondering if a bad injector could be so intermittent over a period of years? Today I did a test that seems to confirm (in my mind anyway) that it is the injector causing the problem and I'd welcome any feedback you all may have before I tear into it to replace the injector.

I clamped a new plug to the block and pulled the spark wire from the number 2 plug and connected it to the grounded plug to have a look at the spark. Then I reconnected and did the same for the #4 plug just to compare, and when I did, the check engine light flashed, which it didn't when the #2 plug was disconnected. This seems to indicate to me that #2 injector isn't spraying any fuel or else the CEL light would have flashed for that one also?

Thanks in advance for any help as it would be great to finally clear up this long term PITA problem!

2003 t4r sport v8

Hello guys, i know this thread is dead now but i have the same problem locating the TPS in the V8 engine. All resources i have seen so far point to the v6 and 3rd gen 4runners. If anyone would be kind enough to show me the location of the TPS in 4th gen v8 i will sincerely appreciate it. My truck currently does not rev past 2000rpm unless it is parked. It sometimes runs sluggishly due to this. It wakes up after driving for a while and the power kicks in but still would not rev past 2000rpm. Any suggestions on what might be the problem apart from the TPS? Thanks, in anticipation.
