Pic request: BD ONx6 30" and a led question

Like the title says I'm looking for someone that has a picture of their 4runner with a 30" baja designs onx6 mounted on a gobi stealth. I have a curved 40 inch but i dont think i like how it looks. Idk what it is, I just am not a fan and I'm thinking it's because it's a taller light bar.

Also if someone is smart or has experience with leds on the rack I have a question. I'm looking at the yellow/white onx6. I have a front bumper coming that removed the fog lights so I'm trying to find an alternate option. Yellow light is supposed to help with fog/snow/dust but if it's on top is that going to hurt my driving more than just having no fog lights. I like simplicity and having one light bar that's spot/flood and yellow/white draws me in but if yellow on top of the vehicle is just going to hurt more than benefit for the purpose of having yellow, I won't get it. i actually ordered a baja onx6 dual control 40 coming soon, ordered yesterday. Putting that onto my prinsu rack when it gets here.
I think its still a good idea to run separate fogs. Rigid makes nice ones in the dually cube size, and the single row 6" size. I have both as well. Just trying to figure out what i'll eventually mount up.

Yellow will definitely help, less reflection or something like that.

Yea, I'm tracking the yellow is better than white and blue for reflection. It's more of a placement question I guess. Thanks for the input though, it's appreciated. I'm in the same boat though. I have a 40 and 20" mounted now but I kinda want one smaller light that does everything.

You're not going to like a lightbar on the roof for use in low visibility conditions. The amount of light reflection you're going to get from a high power bar at full power like the OnX6 is going to pretty much make it useless except in clear weather. The reflection will be directly in front of your windshield, and I'd bet your visual range will be better with it off. If you have the BD harness and run it at 60% option it might be better, but you're still going to get lots of reflection in front of you.

The guys who run Baja and other night races don't have only a roof mount bar. In addition to headlights and fog lights there's usually a bumper light on those vehicles as well. The idea being to get the light where it is most useful.
Fog lights are mounted lower to the ground than headlights because the ground stays warmer than the air, and the beam will have lower density moisture to travel through, hence less reflected light. Desert races have a lower humidity of course, but are dealing more with dust than precipitation/fog. Although desert dust should be lower density than fog. Even on clear nights I get reflection from the humidity by turning on my bumper mounted OnX6 20 inch. The bar is pretty much useless in fog due to the reflection, even mounted on the bumper.

Overall amber/yellow has less perceived reflection/scatter than blue/white, so you're on point with that selection. However with the amount of light output from the OnX6 you're still going to get reflection. In bad weather, I even get it from my amber Squadron-R Sport fog lights. The guys using the Pro kits are likely worse. Are your Pros useful or too bright in fog [MENTION=135421]Ohio_Steve[/MENTION] ?

Consider why you're mounting the bar on the rack, if it's for aesthetics you didn't need to drop that kind of money on the light bar. If you're looking for long range light on clear nights you're doing it right. But if you're interested in using the bar for poor visibility conditions, you might want to reconsider mounting options. There are brackets which allow you to mount a 30" bar behind the grill of our trucks, so you don't even need an aftermarket bumper anymore. Behind the grill mount also doesn't have to worry about the whistle and added wind noise of a rack bar.

That was extemly informative lol. It kinda confirmed my thought behind putting the yellows up top. Aesthetics is nice, the reason i was asking for a picture, but living in Alaska with the winter coming.. I also need to be thinking about usefulness. I drive to areas to snowboard during snowstorms pretty frequently. Thanks very much for the help. I'll have to figure out another way to mount the fogs.

Exactly! The Squadron-R Pro amber wide/cornering are great in clear weather for illuminating the sides of the road (which was my intent when I bought them) but in bad weather, too much reflection. I turned them on once during a heavy snow to see if it would help, and about went snow-blind from the light coming back at me.

I have a 32" bar on my roof rack that came over from my Outback, but I haven't needed to use it. I've even considered taking it off.

I completely missed this part. Which bumper is coming? And why doesn't it have cut-outs or bars for additional lights? I thought that was the whole reason for getting a steel bumper, so you can mount a ton of LED's and a winch.

I don't like the whole ton of leds thing. My goal is to have as little amount of leds to meet my goal of seeing better in good and bad weather. My primary reasons for the bumper was clearance, strength, and a winch. So I went with the addicted off road bumper. They offer to cut slots before they send it out for, what looks like rigid d-series size lights, but I didn't like how they would have been mounted or how they would have looked, tbh. I did just come across a picture with someone who mounted a 20" in the middle so looking at the other pictures I've seen noticed it does have tabs right in the middle. So I bought a small bd 10" amber spot/flood with the harness after contacting bd and asking a few questions about the high/low button. Hopefully it mounts up nice but a fab shop is installing the bumper for me so if it doesn't fit and for some reason I can't fab together a bracket out of home depot parts, I'll have them fab up a bracket for me.

This is the bumper with the fogs they offer, and the picture I saw with the light bar installed.


There's plenty of places I could have mounted them, don't get me wrong. I already have a 20" mounted behind the grill which was my backup option. When I said I needed to find another option, I should have said I have to pick another option.

Haha I've done the same thing with my 40" rack mounted light. It wasn't snow, but dust and for the second I flipped it on I thought the sun had shifted from its normal rotation to directly in front of my car.

I've thought the same thing about my 40". I bought it because (I know this is a stupid reason) a lot of people did it with the gobi rack and I'm thinking it's overkill now. But it's up there already so I'll probably end up leaving it for the time being. My 40" isnt a cheap ebay bar but luckily it wasn't a rigid or bd 40" that costed 1200 dollars lol, so if I do replace it, it wouldn't be like taking a huge hit. Looking back I think a 20" spot and 2 small floods on the rack angled out a bit with the small amber in the grill area would have been the best setup for my goals.

Looking at their website, that 20" bar is mounted where the winch would go. So if you're skipping the winch that might work fine, although maybe a bit high for on road use. I would suggest a 20" bar mounted down from the 2 sets of 4 bolts that hold the bumper onto their front crossmember, which would be much easier to do during installation.
If you're looking for simple fog lights, I'd use a tube mount on the bottom tubes in close to the center of the bumper. Just my opinion, hope it gives you some ideas. Best of luck!
