Oh yeah...I've heard of Safeway ever since I was born, which was 29yrs ago.
There's a Safeway in Vallejo (~40mins) east of San Francisco...they even have a Gas Station.
You also get a discount if you have a Safeway card!!
Never heard of Kroger. We have many Lucky's, Albertson's, Lucky...don't know what the name is now.
We also have Andronico's (~15mins) & Draeger's (~30mins) but I hardly go there. I think they are more private than commerical.
I love going to Costco Warehouse. Do you have warehouse shopping in VA? Where you can buy in bulk?
Jeff Kleb, you miss having a 4Runner? Miss the huge cargo space?

I do miss real Coke and Pepsi but when I do drink pop now it's gotta be the diet variety which now is maybe a can a day and just cutting out real pop and less eating out I've dropped 13lbs in 7 months and my high triglycerides in my blood has dropped dramatically which was advised by my doctor I should do now that I'm over 40. Enjoy the bad stuff when you are young when your body deals with it better.
40g of sugar in one drink is a bit rediculous but man I miss a cold Pepsi/Coke on a hot summer day but I still drink a real one maybe once a month.
Safeway here is selling 12pks for $2 just for a 48hr sale and they are blowing out like crazy.

Cola, Grocery Stores, etc.
Yeah, I have heard of Albertson's.....although we don't have them around here. I never knew Safeway was that big to be all the way in California, though. I know that Kroger is also big -- and has stores in Michigan and South Carolina.
Here in the Richmond area, we have Kroger, Food Lion and Ukrop's (family-owned with about 30 stores) in most parts of town. Winn-Dixie, Hannaford's, Safeway, A&P, Giant and Farm Fresh/Super Fresh used to be here but have decided to abandon the market in our part of the state.
In Northern VA, the biggest supermarkets are Wegman's, Harris-Teeter, Shoppers Food Wareshouse, Giant, Bloom (owned by Food Lion) and Safeway. I know that because they are customers of the company for which I work. Out of every store I have seen, I think Wegman's is probably the nicest. Their wine section alone is about half the size of an entire Food Lion store! If they ever move into the Richmond market, Ukrop's is toast!
Wal-Mart and Target are making inroads into the grocery business with their new "super centers" that sell milk, bread, produce, etc., etc. Costco, Sam's Club and BJ's are warehouse clubs that sell memberships to anyone who wants to shop there. My favorite warehouse club is Costco. I love going there!

As for cola, my new 'favorite' is Coke Zero (black can). It tastes more like "real" Coke than Diet Coke could ever dream of doing! Every now and then, I look for it on sale and can pick up a case of it for six bucks. I have noticed that Coke & Pepsi have been inching up in price and they are discounted less and less than ever before. I will also buy iced tea mix or fruit juice and take that to work instead of drinking soda all the time.
As for missing my 4Runner, yeah I do! However, I don't miss putting gas in it (especially last summer when it got to be four bucks a gallon). My Mustang GT gets better mileage than the 4Runner ever did and is more fun to drive; despite being terrible in bad weather and less valuable for hauling stuff.
Maybe I'll get another 4Runner some day, but it is hard to say. My lease on the GT runs out in January of 2010, so I have some time to decide what I am going to do. My 2002 Nissan Sentra is long-since paid off, so I can still drive that as my 'commuter car' in order to keep my mileage down on whatever I end up leasing. Who knows? Maybe I will end up with a Tundra - but I know they drink a lot more gas than a 4Runner.
P.S. I do love this forum, though. Lots of nice folks here!

walmart is way cheaper, i forgot to check the price but it was near that price of safeway
