It is in fact true that guns (or the ability of law-abiding citizens to have them) do save innocent lives!

What the gun-haters never tell you in their 'statistics' is how many times a crime is stopped or thwarted by the intended victim being armed. 99% of the time, the weapon is never discharged and nobody (good guy or bad guy) takes a ride to the hospital.

Here in VA, we now have over 100,000 free citizens who possess carry permits - and our violent crime rate has decreased. What is even more interesting is that those who have permits are not among the people arrested for committing felonies with firearms. Conversely, the criminals still don't bother with trying to get a permit.

Do a county by county study across the USA, and you'll find that places with more guns "per capita" tend to have less crime than where there are fewer guns. Ironic, eh? You'll also learn that states that more easily issue 'concealed carry' permits generally have lower crime rates than states hostile to private citizens bearing arms.

I'm on board with Jeff & Thai here. Responsible gun ownership absolutely save lives. My Ruger's never been used for anything but target practice but I sleep well at night knowing that it's within reach.

I just bought my wife a Ruger SP101 on Valentine's Day...i know, i know, i am a romantic at heart!

Although it is a 357 revolver, i am only putting in HydraShok 38 special. It is for home defense only.

My wife could not pull back the slide on either my Glock 26 or my Sig Sauer P239...so, i had to get her a revolver...for "point & shoot" ease. I could put a round in the chamber in my Glock 26, but the trigger is too light, which i fear may do more harm than good with my wife. I went searching and found that the above Ruger was well-built and priced relatively low (as compared to S&W). I actually wanted a S&W, but price was just too high. The Ruger was around $480.

You're absolutely correct in getting your wife the revolver...I took conceal & carry class in FL and the instructor specifically recommended revolvers for self-defense for women because they don't have a slide and have relatively less kick-back.

What Ruger do you have??

I have owned a SP101 (3" barrel) since they first came out years ago. It is one of my favorite carry weapons. I am a big Ruger revolver fan and would take one over a S&W in .357 and .44 calibers. Their lock-up mechanism is much stronger than the S&W. I also own a GP-100 6" .357 and a Super Redhawk .44 mag as well as a few S&W and Taurus revolvers. I do dream about a S&W 500 Magnum but aside from bear defense while camping and backpacking, I have no realistic justification for such a beast.


I keep Federal 125 gr JHP's in my SP-101. A bit of a kick and definitely some muzzle flash but controllable. Many SP-101 owners get their's ported so that may be an option for your wife if you decide on using .357 rounds. If she has the 2" barrel than .357s are not worth it due to the loss in muzzle energy IMO.

Anyhow, the SP101 is a great choice in .357 carry!

You have to be careful with .38 SP rounds, especially non +P or +P+. In general these are poorer stoppers than most 9mm rounds. 357 magnum rounds yield lots of muzzle flash, especially in short barrel revolvers. Something to take in consideration after the first couple of rounds in a dark setting. I usually stick with .357, .40 S&W and .45 ACP calibers for carry.


The 125 gr JHP magnum round was the top stopper in Evan Marshall's exhaustive study of one-shot stopping power results over several years. This round exhibited one-shot stops in the 95 - 97% range - better than any round tracked, including 45 ACP and .44 magnum rounds.


This was before the advent of the .357 SIG caliber and before some of the rounds new to the market in the past few years. While the Federal magnum 125 gr JHP was dubbed "king of the street" at the time, it is possible to pick out a good stopper in most calibers based on empirical results. Of course the best stopper is no good without accuracy and proper placement!
