It has been 20,000 miles since I had the PMS, I still wonder if I'm on borrowed time but it does drive very well....I hope it keeps going....
LOL Definitely shame on me. To be honest I have not seen or noticed any threads on that. I have looked at many subjects but for some reason never ran across one of the threads. Wish I had though. From what threads I have ran across since then it looks like a lot of others wish they had also.I've tried to be proactive on timing belts, water pumps etc but never heard of this one.
I have already ordered 2 radiators for my other 2 4runners, my weekend is planned!! I will call around some more and see what I can find on rebuilds or used.

I used the Koyo A1998 as a replacement. I think it is the same as OEM for 1/2 price.

Since you seem to miss the important posts and you didn't mention it in this quote, change your lower ball joints also before more bad things happen to you! :infidel: :hungry:

Oh Go-parts , I ordered a koyo from them what a crap operation.
After 5 days of waiting for shipment to occur I decided to give them a call to see what the hold up was.
I called , I called , I called for 3 days getting answering machine so I left message getting no reply.
I then sent email requesting cancellation , 4 days later got reply that order was canceled and 19.00 restocking would be charged.
From there I was PI**** called for days getting answering machine.
Rep finally picked up told me full refunded would be applied.
Its been 4 weeks now & I'm still waiting for full refund

I have went back and read over the buyers guide . Saw the article on the ball joints as well as other items that I need to check, Now I am paranoid, I will be replacing those next. I might have looked this article over a while back but I guess since most of the articles on the bad things said that these were RARE occurences it did not register as important as it should.

I have looked over some of the articles on the Ball joint failures and at first check it does not look like my years 1997,99 and 2000 are in the list. From the lists I checked it was 2001 and 2002. But I guess it does not hurt to replace them anyway. Like I said, Now I am paranoid and want to replace any major parts that can cause major problems. With my wife and my son and my 4runner anything I do I have to do times 3.

LBJs are a wear item, they need to be replaced and toyota recommends they be replaced every 100k miles. LBJ failure is not related to specific years or model. all 4runners had the same LBJ and all from the same manufacture... bottom line, if your 4runner has over 100k miles on it this item should be on the list of things to do. also if you wheel your truck or have a lift or extra weight ie bumper or armor, this will increase the wear on them, and they should probably be changed out sooner say every 80k miles(?).
im not trying to say that its gonna happen tomorrow or in two years from now, because in all reality its very hard to know. the only thing we do know is that when they do go, they can cause some really bad damage and total out rigs. but i have also seen(personally) some really minor ones that did no damage. its a roll the dice deal... we have yet to see a major injury or fatality here on the forum from a LBJ, but i really think its only a matter of time before it happens to some one someplace.
I had a Honda pilot with a pink milkshake a couple of years ago.. I am so paranoid about it, I just replaced the radiator on my '01 with 42k miles in it, just because it is 11 years old- thinking age (corrosion) more than mileage may be the primary factor in failure... Whatever- $150 and I have piece of mind for now.

i dont think 4runners ever got recalled for LBJs, i think some tacomas might have and tundras as well but to my knowledge no 4runners ever got recalled

I think 01-02s got called back for LBJs...but I'm not 100% positive.

Huh, that seems awfully suspicious that they recalled some 4runners for this but not all. Especially since the PN for the LBJ spec'd for one of the recall VIN's is the same as the LBJ PN for my 2000...
I am curious how the new LBJ kit they installed as a fix was different. Unless they had a quality spill on something like a poor temper job on the steel, or something like that, then I don't see how it woudl be just limited to the 01-02's.
This was discussed before in an older thread, but Toyota vastly changed the design of the LBJ's for the 4th gen, changing it to a failsafe design. No more catastrophic failures. Instead of the LBJ being in tension like the 3rd gens, the 4th gen has the LBJ's in compression.
