Pioneer avh-p3100dvd vs 4100

I know there's an Audio section, but I'm more interested in the use of either of these in our 3rd gen runners. I've been looking at both of these and can get the 3100 for $325 shipped and the 4100 for $435.95 shipped. They come with the install kit and the harness.

What I want to know is how well these fit into our trucks (flush or not). Also, why did you choose between the two? Those with the 4100, are you able to change the cd with the vehicle in park (since it tilts downward)? I'm not so much interested in watching video with it, more so for the ipod and other capabilities (not to mention the stock unit is terrible haha).

So if any of you have any suggestions or comments after running either of these (or others even), that would be helpful.

I can't comment much on these particular Pioneer decks (Pioneer is a quality product IMHO so no worries), but I've run both the Alpine and Kenwood NAV units in my 4Runner. Based on that, I'd go with the 4100 for the bigger display screen. That extra inch of screen makes a big difference to me as far as seeing the display info. Just my two cents on a narrow point.

3100 has a front usb input. its not totaly touch screen. you DO NOT need to buy the pioneer cable to get full advantage of the ipod. i think its a better outfit than the 4100. look at pioneers website for side by side specs. i got my 3100 for 277 brand new shipped from amazon..

Not sure how I missed that thread. Very nice, clean install!!! :thumb3: With the 4100, how do you access the use of the usb port? Does it have a wire that's male-female that you can run to say the glove box, instead of male-male like you'd have for ipod hook up? I'm assuming that would be the case. I think the 4100 looks a bit cleaner since there are less buttons, ports, and cd slot showing.

Do you have any pics of your setup? Especially with your ipod and whatnot hooked up to the front ports. I'd like to see how you handle wires and such since it's harder to hide them with the ports on the front. Thanks

Look up some vids on youtube. The USB port in front of the 3100 looks like it could get really annoying. I was thinking of possibly getting the 4100 ever since I saw Rock Slide's thread.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that would be annoying and messy looking. A big part of why I want one of these units is for the ipod functionality. Right now I have one of those FM transmitter things that plugs into the 12v and it's annoying as crap. But if someone has a good way to deal with the wires, then the 3100 may still be an option (prob not though after seeing more pics)

I found a site that has pics of what all comes with the unit, and I saw how you have what looks like the CD-IU200V wire (sold separately) for the ipod playback. So did you just run the usb cable that comes with the unit, as shown in the pic below, and then hook up the ipod playback wire to it? Since there's only 1 usb port on the unit, I figured that'd be the only way to still have access to the USB function (for loading pics etc when needed) but mainly use it for the ipod. And bc I plan to have it run to the glove compartment, it will be out of the way, but accessible. Does that even make sense?

Yeah, that's what I'm using. I ran the USB cable from the back of the HU, to inside the center console. From there, the ipod cable plugs into the female end of the usb cable and then the cable runs up into the top tray of the center console and plugs into the ipod.

With the female end of the usb cable inside the center console, I can unplug the ipod cable and use the usb port for other devices...such as uploading photos to the HU from my digital camera for example.
