Pioneer Head Unit - Randomly Switching off

This is a strange issue, the CD player in my 2nd gen 4 runner just randomly switches off from time to time. Most of the time it will do this when I try to skip a song by pressing the buttons on the CD Player Face. Then it will just randomly turn back on again all on its own.

I have figured out that I can change songs using the remote control and it doesnt switch off so it leads me to believe there is a connection issue inside the unit and not a bad grounding wire or something.

Also, when it switches off I can hear a single "click" coming from near the fuse box down to below to the left of the steering wheel. Sounds like a switch or relay or fuse (maybe not) if changing.

Also when it randomly comes back on, I can also hear this "click" noise just before it starts working again.

Im guessing the head unit is just on its way out, but this clicking noise tends to make me think its a bad ground or something.

Yeah this does sound like a bad connection like you mentioned. Especially since it does it when you touch the unit and does not when you use the remote. I would pull the hu out and check all the connections on your wire harness

So I pulled out the Head Unit (along with my glove compartment and half the dash) unplugged it and plugged it all back it.

It seems to be much better now, still occasionally screws up, but now I think its an issue with the actual face plate of the CD player. When I move that around is when it screws up.

Still undecided on whether I should replace it or not. Its a nice Pioneer CD player but for $130 bucks I can get another one with MP3 and AUX input for an ipod or something so I might just do that.

I think this a great unit for $130. The only down side is that it doesn't have preamp outputs, but if you don't plan on adding an amp it wouldn't really matter. Click here. It has a great stock appearance with aftermarket performance and I think the lighting would match too

just buy a new pioneer deck, new ones are nice, panasonic is crap, thats why there are no more panasonic car audio, just get like a 5800 from pioneer, if ur an audiophile like me i would get a deh-p800prs(16 band eq), but im fine with my deh-p8600mp(13 band eq) for now, but that extra 3 bands eq is handy.
