Pirelli Scorpion Tires

Anyone have personal experience with either of the Pirelli Scorpion tires?

I'm researching either the STR series or the ATR for my '05 T4R.



I'm torn between the Pirelli or the Yoko Geolander HTS.
I like Michelin but hate the French-ownership....so, I won't consider their products.

I'm in the same boat as you. But I'm torn between the Toyo Open Country A/T or the Yokohama Geolander AT-S.

Tirerack has the Yokohama AT-s for $116 and they look like a good tire for the price. Still new and not too much feedback.

The Pirellis haven't gotten favorable reviews over the years and I'd avoid them. The Yoks are much better for a DD tire with ok off road capability.

The Scorpion ATR (recently released within the past 12 months) is the highest rated On/Off Road Tire...higher even than the darlin of the board, the Revo's.

I really like the black sidewall on the ATR's too.

I'm scared of doing TireRack. What if there's an issue with the tire...the local yokal may say "That's what you get for not dealing with local dealers".


Opinions??? I know I can save a little by doing Tirerack but still add shipping and installation and I'm not saving THAT much.

Casper,who rated the Pirellis? My negative reviews come from people that actually have quite a bit of off road experience with them and will never own another set. I'd like to see them compared to a set of Terra Grapplers or the tried and true BFGs on some trails since the Revo is admitedly not really a great off road tire than it is a road going tire with some off road capability.

I know I'm not really comparing apples to apples, as you are asking about the ATR/STR's, but I had a set of Pirelli AT's on a previous truck of mine and hated them. They flat spotted horribly when the weather was cold (below about 45 degrees). The first 5 minutes or so of driving in the winter it almost seemed as though the tires were square. They performed pretty well on dry roads, okay on wet roads and horribly off road and in the snow.

I had both Goodyear RT/S (orig equip) and BFG AT's on the truck prior to putting on the Pirelli's and they both performed much better overall than the Pirelli's. Personally, I'll never own another set of Pirelli's.

granted those reviews and ratings are from tire rack's customer rating system but they do rate higher than that of the Revos. I dont have a fond memory of many pirelli products but i think in the past 3 or so years they have really gotten their shit together and started designing some good things. Their high performance Pzero Nero tires are FABULOUS.

can you get Nitto Terra Grapplers? Toyo owns Nitto and as such, Toyo is the higher dollar offering from Toyo Tire and Rubber Group. The O.C's and T.G's are nearly the same tire.

I had a set of low profile yokohama Parada's on some 18's for little low rider (haha) and I don't know if I got lemons or what but they F***in SUCKED!! i went to so much trouble with them i got the tire place to give me half my money back and a cheap little set of kumho's and they ride better, look just as good, and inch wide bands of rubber don't peel off the the things while i'm driving, so I have a real hard time spending alot of money on "big brand" tires

prada and the prada spec 2 are not designed for SUV's but for lower weight compact imports and as suck would have sucked for anything over about 3000lbs.

It's been a while....those of you torn between Toyo Open Country and Yokohama Geolandars, what happened? Are you happy with what you chose?

I am wrestling with that decision right now and looking for any feedback.

Regarding Tirerack. I have probably purchased 3 or 4 sets of tires (for all the cars in my family) and haven't had a single issue with Tirerack. That being said, I guess you could have a "out of round" or some other defect in a tire shipped to you. But the chances are pretty small.

I would think the Tirerack would make it good. They do have a good reputation.

Before deciding upon the Toyo Open Country A/T's I was also debating about whether or not to go for Pirelli ATR's, REVOS, and BFG KO's. The choice was narrowed down to the ATR's or the Open Countries (stock height but went with 275/70/17). The revos and ko's were on a ridiculous backorder and I wanted the tires in time for snowboarding season..whistler BC baby...So I went with the Toyo's...great all around tire IMO..definitely not as good offroading compared to the BFG's as I've read..but they definitely get the job done in rainy vancity as well as snow..keep in mind they're not GREAT..but are definitely a great bang for your buck..just one above the terragrapplers! I would classify the Toyo's as a good city/occasional back country tire on a student budget! I'm going for the KO's after these wear out tho...
