That is exactly what lead me to start this CBI thread. We have roof rack threads for instance but no consolidated skid thread.
I should look at starting a consolidated thread on 5th Gen skid plates if there really isn't one
I went ahead and started one. Please contribute to expanding the first post

Answering my own question for completeness sake on this thread. Jason's CBI skid plate install video was posted yesterday. Reason's given for the switch from RCI:
- He has a sponsorship brand deal with CBI.
- He wanted something that was more heavy duty for the new terrain he'll be doing since moving to Utah. He originally bought aluminum skids because he was weight conscious when he first started modin', but now he doesn't care about weight or better mpg. [My Note: RCI has steel skids too.]
- CBI skids have more drain holes.
- CBI has broader coverage (he says that CBI skids are wider than the RCI skids, in particular the the transmission skid plate).
- CBI front skid is a front and transfer case combined as one plate, whereas RCI is two components.
- Added a fuel tank skid as he was using the OEM Trail one before. [My Note: - RCI has a fuel tanks skid too.]

You're going about it the wrong way bro. You gotta get Instagram and just @ everybody until they notice you. You also have to # every single mod you've every done to your rig as well. Then you gotta do giveaways and raffles. After all that you'll be Instafamous
Don't forget to drop $20,000 on mods that should theoretically equip you to do the Rubicon but then only cruise gravel roads but still act hard.

Yeah, I think I'm going to spend $60K on an off-road trailer...
Gotta tell ya', Jason's latest video sold me on the CBI units so his relationship with CBI is working already.
Was going to get in on the RCI group buy but will now try to get the local lads to get me some CBI units in the new year. Much nicer system albeit in steel only and costing more. Wonder if CBI will fab aluminum sets?

I think CBI does sell them in aluminum. You might have to call and ask them about it but they had that option a few weeks ago. I might have to go with CBI as well mainly because I broke my threaded weld nuts on the transmission crossmember on the passenger side. The RCI transmission skid is only held together on the driver side at the moment. Since the RCI skid system is like a puzzle there really isn't anything holding that part of the transmission skid and crossmember skid together on that side. With the CBI rear skid it looks like the transmission and crossmember skid are all one piece so I won't have to worry about missing 1 or 2 bolt locations.

Just wanted to say I'm in awe of your trailer and it's exactly what I'd get right now if I had a place to park it. Thanks for going into the hitch issues also, really enjoyed going through your blog!

Nothing wrong with Shills unless they fail to disclose it. I think Jason got called out on it in his comment section so he came clean.
Either way, he goes on a 7 minute intro explaining why he changed all the things that he did, but bottom line is he probably wouldn't have changed one thing if he had to pay for all that stuff on his own dime. All the stuff he had on his truck that he replaced was good stuff, just not good enough stuff as in free/discounted stuff.
To me, he's no more than a commercial for CBI, ICON, and Turtleback trailers at this point. I still watch him for the 4runner content, but I tune him out when he tries to justify his products....... He just should do what overland expedition does, and list his sponsors, and save the viewers, the agony of watching him explain his BS reasons.

Meh. As for Jason and his videos, I scrub through them to the parts that I care to see, such as "What does this product look like installed? How does it perform once installed?"
Nothing about the videos is technical enough to serve as a How-To guide. It's all infomercial, but I go into it knowing that.
The folks who are pissed off about him getting discounts or free gear to rep companies are generally just jealous that they aren't riding the same gravy train though, so just own that hate and move past it. There are better reasons to dislike watching him, such as the fact that he rambles like crazy.
Totally me watching his videos when he goes off on a tangent...

Thanks for the compliments! I was lucky and stole my trailer for under $5k many years ago so that freed me up to make the mods I wanted and to take it out and use it a lot. I know it is really just glamping but I have been on enough hard core adventures that I like having fun with the trailer.
Swellrunner's video just left me frustrated because it offered a quick glimpse of the skids installed but no views of how they mount, how they are constructed and what allows CBI to justify the price. For most people the first 8 min of the video can be skipped. It also sucks that CBI has inaccurate pictures and very little information on their web site.

While I do appreciate and enjoy (for the most part) Jason’s videos, I was hoping he would be interview or just talk to the guys at Icon and CBI regarding their products and what they had to offer. In regards to the skid, I wish he/they provided more info (as others already stated) of what changed and why. I did email CBI on Sunday regarding the skids but have yet to hear back from them...

The trailer is so well-laid-out and clean. Really appeals to OCD sufferers like me but is also just simply well-done. I'd rather have something like yours than a US$40K Patriot or something for sure.
The industry is going to jump it's own shark, it's inevitable and individuals involved directly in testing, promo and sales shouldn't become scapegoats. These are just smart business people living their lives and growing their businesses I'd submit. This "content" has been a great help in decision-making for the most part, caution is still needed and advised from my experience in the short time of my involvement.
I will certainly need more detail before I buy them also and it's too bad they don't offer more detail on their site. I don't think there's any question as to which brand offers the best coverage but the ways that some of these mods actually mount onto the vehicle is a big deal to me, maybe too big a deal but I'm weird that way...
This isn't directed at you [MENTION=6100]teotwaki[/MENTION] but general comments... I'm grateful he's been doing what he has, like other prominent overlanders out there, and still look forward to his movies. His films are one of the reasons I've gotten into car camping and "overlanding" and one of the reasons I zeroed-in on 4Runner so he and a few others have had some influence in my whole trip personally.
I appreciate very much the sharing of experience by those who've blazed the trail so many thanks to Jason and hope he keeps-up the great work!
There will always be criticism, and that's good but a little praise never hurt either.

Seems to me the only difference in coverage for the front is sway bar bushings. Both CBI and Shrockworks cover the the bushings while RCI does not. I don't consider that a major area to protect but YMMV. As far as I can tell it looks like the CBI transfer skid just covers a bit more of the cross member. I could be wrong since I'm just zooming in on the pics on my computer. I don't like how the CBI transfer skid has that lower piece, it just looks like something to get bashed on for no reason.
On to bagging on Jason, and I really hope he reads this. I don't care about the sponsorship deals. Like others have said, it can be informative and help people with their decisions to actually see a product used. I understand trying to get free stuff. My complaint is he has a $26k+ trailer with Icon suspension, a $7500+ Icon suspension on his truck, all the CBI gear he can fit on his truck, yet he still wants people to go to his Patreon page to pay him to get GPS coordinates. I've got no problem with people making money by selling merch and such, but you can piss right off with that pay to play bs.

Jason is a content creator, his efforts and time are used to create media content people can watch. It is a buisness and part of that model is patreon, it is not required. If you watch his free content you are blessed to do so becuase he could go else where and create that content. It is not cheap nor easy to do what he does.
You saying "he can piss right off" seens nasty and uncalled for.

Hefty RCI and CBI
My friend purchased aluminum RCI for his KDSS, so before I made my decision I asked what he thought of them. He said the price is why he got them, but if he were to do it again he would do hefty or cbi and he felt the bracing and build is not as strong on the rci.
So I decided to do heftyfad (unfortunately I don't remember why, likely wanted to be different since cbi is popular). The build quality and strength is great but the design I have some major concerns about specific on the front plate. To create the best approach angle it is cut in a way the is almost straight up and down versus a slope, while I haven't seen the cbi it appears to be much better for higher speed impacts based on the angle. Also I currently don't have a dif drop but the amount of extra space between the vehicle the the inside of the skid is like 1.5" loosing losing tons of clearance. I haven't even done a trip since the installation and already looking to sell it and get a cbi... I did full hefty skids with tank and like everything else just fine... it also looks like the cbi has better protection in front of the mounting bolts than the hefty.
Anyone want to buy a front plate aluminum painted black for less in sac area... good price :shocked: let me know.
