Having been a longtime Jeeper, I am now planning to retire my old cherokee and get an 05' - 07' 4Runner. Is there a specific model year that is maybe a little more desireable? How about the engines, 4.0 or 4.7? I don't plan to do any towing, but is one a little more prone to problems than the other? Are there any special features I should look for while checking out the dealers? Thanks for any input!

If I were you id go with an 06-07, the 06 model added projector headlights, mp3 capable radio and led tails. All stuff I wish I had on my '05. The engines are the same for 05-07, if you go back to an '04 V6 then you get a 4 spd auto tranny instead of the 5. Either way you will def. like it better than your jeep.

Get the V8, back to back against the V6 its smoother and quite a bit faster.
If 05 is your cutoff, I'd recommend the 05. The only reason is that I like the more angular, squared off look on the 03-05 models than the rounder (and I think softer) styling on the 06-09. This is just a matter of personal opinion though.

Looks are somewhat of a personal preference so we could debate that forever but as for the engine the V8 is better but not by much. After having both I would stand by my decision of getting a V6 after the V8. Its not quite as smooth (although it is close), but is just as fast in all intensive purposes and the added fuel efficiency and lower costs should seal the deal for many. Also, one thing is I do not tow, if you are planning on it, I retract my statement and you should get a v8.

05 you get some mechanical ugrades, 5 speed on the V6 and vvt-i on the V8. The 06 has some neat upgrades like projector headlights, mp3 capable radio and some really nice LED tail lights.
I know you didn't mention the 08, but on that year, you get side air bags and curtain air bags as standard equipment, sure they were on some 4Runners, but it was a option. Just something to consider, in case you see a 08.

I am a Ford convert and have had my 4 Runner for just over a year now and can tell you I will NEVER buy anything else again. I have the 06 and LOVE it. Just upgraded the single cd to the 6 disc and the plain hood to the scoop hood. Eventually plan to add the rear spoiler. The ride is awesome, nice and smooth, quiet and comfortable. I have the V6. Gas mileage is great. I do not tow.
