How hard is it to get a good finish with the plastidip spray? I've thought about trying it on my wheels but wasnt sure how it would look with me having a black 4runner. Im also not the best spray painter. This was the first ive heard about putting a clear on. Which ones have you used that didn't react with the plastidip?

I did mine - car wash has no peeling issue - looks great - package of index cards and two cans of paint - $15 bucks - 3 hours of my time - Free - easiest mod yet - also did the front grill and tailgate piece above license plate (had to remove inside panels to get to it but looks great!)

plastidipped SR5 wheels
here are some pics, finally plastidipped my wheels this weekend. removed the front mud flaps. soon removing the side-steps. i plastidipped the side and rear badges, will update with some pics. loving it so far.
not the best cell phone pics, but figured it's good for now.

if you're using plastidip, there's no need to tape off your tires as plastidip doesn't adhere well to petroleum based products (petroleum based solvents are like an eraser to this product). as long as you armor all your tires and clean them before you spray with plastidip, you'll be good to go. when it's dry, the plastidip will peel right off the tire, usually in one big round piece....

Just a heads up, be careful if you go through any hub washes at the car wash. I did so and chipped up a wheel pretty bad.

I plasti dipped a while back with some clear coat over it to keep the glossy look and help with chipping, etc.

I just used regular rustoleum clear coat. Make sure it’s actually clear coat spray paint and not white or a grey color. You could even just spray over the plasti dip with regular gloss black spray paint for the same effect

I've dipped rims multiple times multiple ways, so here is my $0.02 for those yet to do it:
Here's the best tutorial I used when learning (may be a better one now, but this will cover it all): Plasti Dip Your Wheels
Tips:
-Wash your wheels the day of/night before real good! (do it by hand)
-Plasti Dip is normally cheapest at Home Depot/Walmart (everything at DYC is over priced imo....good tutorials, bad prices)
-The beauty of PD is that it's removable ->for it to remove easy though, you need to have a nice thick coating -> Use about a can per wheel (you'll use it all if you're truly covering every angle of the wheel evenly) and do about 5 coats (its really a pain to remove the little spots when it all doesn't peel off at first), 10-15 mins between coats, rotate the wheels 180 after coat 3
- Use a clear coat - it looks better, and the dip will last longer - anyone will do
- For this job, it's easier to spray the wheels off of the car, but most people doing this might not have the ability to take all 4 wheels off at once (I tried doing wheels one at a time, trust me it sucks) -> So leave the wheels on, use the garbage bag method to cover the brakes and spray all 4 at the same time (10-15mins between coats)
- No taping needed! Masking stuff off is a pain, but good prep is the key to a good job! -> simplest way is to apply ALOT of tire shine to the tire wall right before spraying, and give a quick wipe of the rim edge to make sure there is no tire shine on it (then the over spray just peels right off the tire, I made it a point to spray some of the tire wall at the end of each coat to make the removal easier)

Paint over the plasti dip with any color! Did this a few times over the years, bronze once and gunmetal twice. Works wonders.

I've contemplated doing this before, using regular paint over Dip, as dip doesn't match certain colors so easily.... it all peels off just as easy? I guess I'd have to go back and mask off the tire as opposed to the tire shine route
Side note: I swear I'm still gonna get with you eventually for the LED cluster swap, just been busy fixing other things :lmao:
If you paint over Dip it still comes off its not as easy as just dip tho. Comes off in chips and can be annoying to get off.

Depends on which “as easy” your talking about. Easy off tires on original spray? Just gotta rub the tire some for paint to come off, I use the card trick and never got any on tires. Maybe a spot or two! When taking off of wheel, it takes a little more work, I have just used a pressure washer and it flakes off.
