Plasti-Dip your wheels?

I'm not sure if anyone here has tried this, but over on my other forum (I have a new G37 coupe), a lot of guys started using Plasti-Dip to paint their wheels, grilles, rear valence, and even roof! Supposedly the stuff is tough. And if you do damage it (curb rash or whatever), you can simply peel it off and respray it.

Wow that is impressive-I guess I did not realize it came in a spray type of can.

I believe Harbor Freight has it but never really looked that close at it before.

Yeah, give it a shot. The guys on my G37 forum love it. Quick and easy, and reversible or repairable too.

I've never even used it. I was just passing on the info from my G37 forum because I know a lot of guys here like to make their wheels black, and this seemed like a great way to do it that's also reversible.

That sounds like a great idea. Jed, do you know what kind of surface prep is required for Plasti-Dip spray?

This is a brilliant idea....I should rip the vinyl off my chrome bumpers and just put this stuff on there.

Most guys say they just wash and dry the surface really well and that's it. If you look at the pics of the G37 in the link that I provided, the car has Plasti-Dip on its wheels, grille, roof, and the lower rear valence (around the exhaust tips) and all of it can be peeled off and/or resprayed. No need to sand the surface before "painting" it with Plasti-Dip. But you have to keep in mind that this stuff is more of a "rubber" type of coating than a spray paint. This is the stuff that people use to make handles on their pliers by dipping them into the can....well, actually the stuff these guys are using is the spray-on version of that.

You can find it at Lowe's, Home Depot, O'Reilly's Auto, HF.

I sprayed my OEM roof rack with this stuff a few weeks ago and it looks great. I didn't even prep it!! Also painted the surround of the license plate.

I am going to spray the plastic parts of my front and rear bumpers, and mudguards too.

I went to one Home Depot yesterday and they didn't carry it...another one I went to was out, and HF only had the actual 'tool dip' and not the spray cans. Blah.

So now I am curious to know...This weekend I cleaned sanded and painted my front grill black. Originally it was the chrome, so I didn't take the chrome off or anything. I put about 4 coats on but didn't do a clear coat. Not sure how long it is going to last with bugs and rock chips. Now if I do the plasti dip do I have to remove the black paint that I put on this weekend or can I just go right over it?

While I am not sure of how the plasti dip will hold up on wheels, I sprayed it on the existing black paint on my roof rack and it was fine. If there are any flaky spots of existing paint you might want to try to sand that off but if they are smooth then you should be ok.

You should not have to remove the black paint. The G37 guys have applied it over painted surfaces with any issues. I'm not sure how well it will hold up long term, but so far it seems to be pretty damn durable. And like I said, if you decide you don't like it, you can peel it off.

i ran in to the same problem at HF... no spray and only yellow. I think i will try the auto parts stores next. Probably the best place to find the spray.
