Plasti Dipped Emblems (pics)

This afternoon I coated my badges with plasti dip.

I followed the instructions from this link: Club Lexus Forums - View Single Post - DIY - Matte Black Emblems - Plastidip, no emblem removal required!

I know there are many threads on this topic, I wanted to share my experiences.

This mod was very simple and straightforward. The plasti dip peels off the paint with ease, and the paint masking of the badges is what took the most time

The only things I did differently from the guide was used a golf tee and a broken off q-tip to pry up the tight spots, then used tweezers to pull off the rubberized spray.

1st light coat

2nd coat 5 mins later

3-rd coat after 15 mins

1-hour cure, peels right off

yea the toothpick works great for the insides

Take some up close shots if you don't mind. I tried to do mine yesterday, but had a lot of trouble getting it to peal off clean.

I like the tweezer idea though.

Why didn't you do the Toyota symbol?

Not sure if this helps anybody, but I'm sure if you took a small razor and cut around the badges, it would peel off clean......

That scratches the paint though. I guess what I really meant was getting "inside" the letters and emblems. Like all the small nooks and crannies.

I guess if you're not steady with the knife.....I've got a scalpel that I use when doing tiny work on stuff. I used to do plastic car models as a kid and young adult, so I'm pretty steady with the knife.... If I were plasti-dipping my emblems, when trimming around them, I would make the cuts as close to the emblems as possible, even try to get a little under them where the adhesive is. This way you wouldn't cut through to the paint. As for inside, the letters, I would probably pre-mask those areas, so not to get the plasti-dip on them in the first place. Then, trim with above mentionned knife, before removing the masking tape. It would be very labor intensive, but would give you a good finish.


I'm not sure of any other solution, but someone else who has done the mod, may chime in. I've only painted emblems on my Monte Carlo, and not my 4Runner.

If you have enough patience to do all that you can come do mine any time. Ha.

I don't see any possible way to tape off inside the letter. There's only about 2-3 mm gap between them.

When there is a will, there's a way! HA HA HA! Have you not seen all the PITA work I've done to my rig?

Most recently, light pods and plasti-dip my lower valance.....

I kinda thrive doing this kinda stuff! I used to paint gauge clusters in the dashes of small car models! HA HA!

That's a huge PITA to do. You have to get all the old glue off, then put on the new glue or tape and then align it perfectly.

The tweezers totally helped.

Just pull up a little piece of plasti dip with the toothpick and pull it back towards you with the tweezers. It will peel off easily

I left the toyota symbol chrome because I like the contrast

as Clemson said, removing the badges is a pain. Plasti dip is a rubberized spray, it will peel right off your paint but stick to the badges fine (see pics). it really is a very simple job, and it looks great

Could you put some Scotch tape around the lettering and just peel It away when your done painting? Cut the tape in small pieces and put them in the gaps.

people are saying to mask off the small areas... well, no matter what you do your going to have to get to that small area when removing. the problem is not that the plastidip doesnt come off, its that its a pita to get to it without scratching other areas. so either way masking it, or not, its going to just take patience and precision to get the small areas.

Did all mine today in a couple hours (while simultaneously restoring my headlights). It would take far longer to attempt tpo mask off the letters than to just pick them with a toothpick. Maybe a few seconds with a toothpick per letter.

wouldn't the easiest thing be to do just get a blow-dryer and heat up the emblem till it easily pulled right off.

The idea of taping and then painting right on the truck seems dangerous to me. I am glad it worked out for you but I would never do it that way.

check the link he posted, i did this as well its pretty trippy.
but with plastidip it peels right off just like tape.

this is wayy easier then taking off emblems and paiting.
its also 10x faster and its like the plastidip already knows where to peel from the letters on the badges. pretty neat stuff and for only $5-$6 a can cant go wrong.

Where are y'all getting yours from?

The last two times I've bought it it cost me $8.30 a can with taxes.
