plasti dipping the hood

Hey all, I have a silver 2000 T4R. The paint on the hood is starting to fade, especially around the hood scoop, so I've decided to plasti dip the entire hood. What's the color that's closest to the OEM silver paint? I'm thinking Aluminum or Satin White Aluminum? Also how many cans would I need for the entire hood? I'm thinking about a half a dozen for a couple of coats? More? Thanks in advance!

No idea on number of cans, but make Damn sure you apply it right and you get it off sooner than 2 years (and probably smart not to wait that long) else you will have a Massive headache on your hands. I ended up having to freaking wet-sand the stuff off the one hood I did just after 2 years, which meant then having to do a whole bunch of polish work to the painted hood and basically was just worse off then if I'd never have used the stuff to begin with.

It all depends on what shade of silver you have and even then there's a very good chance it's not gonna match whatsoever; on top of some of Toyotas colors being stupid hard to color match already (for example, millennium silver) you also have to account for any way the paint on the adjacent panels has faded/altered over the years with age - and not to mention the hood would be lacking clearcoat, pearlescent and/or metal flake as well - it would all just stick out like a sore thumb. And as said, do it wrong and you're gonna be sanding it bare down the line
Duplicolor should sell your color, you could also use the plastidip as a sort of primer/base layer then spray the touch-up paint on top of that. In theory you should be able to peel it then if need be; this is something I've tried on various small projects but nothing with a finish like a body panel and definitely nothing large. Just a thought
I would ask yourself if you'd rather have a slightly faded hood, or one that doesn't match at all

Personal experience tells me that doing plasti-dip in place of paint is going to be regretted for the entire time that you have it on the vehicle. With the exception of heavily coated blacked-out emblems, it has all turned crap for me. The fade on it is really disappointing after only a year, so all the money you spend will be gone somewhere within 3 months to 2 years max. As other people have mentioned in the thread, the color will never match.
