Plastic Hanging Underneath

Hey guys...
Was looking at the Runner this morning and thought I saw a leaf stuck in the plastic under the truck... It's really wet out but crawled under enough to see that a BIG piece of plastic/fiberglass was broken off what looks like a skid plate under the drivers side... It's close to the front axle shaft, maybe it protects it? Does anyone know the specific name of this piece? Is it just a plastic skid plate? I know I'm not giving the greatest details... Like I said, it's wet out and I'm on my way to work. You can see the converter if that makes it easier to place where I'm talking about... Thanks!!

It's called the Transmission Under Cover, and it is simply a splash plate to help keep mud and stuff off the transmission and transfer case. It's not a major thing.

If you want a new one from Toyota the part number is 51495-35010

This discussion came up couple of weeks back when someone was wondering what happened to the one on his passenger side, ....., but they don't come with one on the passenger side, only the driver. I am still not sure what that piece is supposed to protect, if anything. Mine has a couple of holes in it, but it is still hanging on. There may be some fuel lines or something else there that it is acting as a splash guard for. I am going to do a little more research into this as it is starting to bother me now, not knowing its purpose.

Thanks for the info Techno. I guess they figure the transmission can only get splashed from the drivers side (???). Or, maybe the particular components they are trying to protect are on the drivers side.

Yeah, it does seem kind of lame, but I suppose it does something useful. Might be more oriented towards stopping rocks and stones from hitting something that's only on that side.

I tore mine off wheeling and I'm just waiting to find a replacement from somebody parting out a Runner.

The fuel lines and filter are right there on the drivers side. That is what this cover is protecting.

Mmm good point! Don't need to make the fuel line more vulnerable than it already is! I will get one through work at cost, maybe 'Yota, maybe Keystone Automotive if anyone is familiar with them. It's only fiberglass, so I don't see there being too much of a difference. It will be replaced regardless.

As for the clean undercarriage, it doesn't hurt that I work at a carwash and get all the free washes we ALL want! Thanks though!
