PlastiDip treatment for the 4Runner

I decided to give the PlastiDip a shot on the 4Runner, I never have been a huge fan of the smoked chrome grill on our black SE. I think it turned out really well and if it doesn't hold up, or I get tired of it, I can simply peel it right off. I also decided to paint the lower portion of the bumper between the fogs to tie in the grill to the rest of the car.

After doing the front, I went ahead and painted the rear emblem. The nice thing about the plastiDip is you don't have to mask off close to the logo, just mask and inch or so around it and peel the excess after allowing it to dry for an hour.

I did my front and rear emblems a few weeks back as well and love it, it looks great. That plasti-dip stuff is pretty cool to work with, when you first spray it, you wonder how in the hell it'll ever look good. Then, it builds up and levels off and looks great. :cheers:

Good work. I used Plasti Dip this weekend to touch up my rear bumper cover and hitch. I like how it has a flat black color.

Did you remove the Plasti Dip from inside the emblem on the back?

Yep, for the inside ovals I used a toothpick to sort of lift and peel, worked great! The plastiDip peeled off clean around the edges, the remaining stuff you see in the pic is just road gunk.

It is very forgiving to use, much more than standard paint. There were a few times when I sprayed it on a little heavy and was worried about runs, but it does flatten out quite well.

Thanks for all the comments, i'm still getting used to the look, but so far I really like it..

I'm debating on spraying the wheels down the road. Maybe when I get some tires I'll spend another 6 bucks and see how they turn out. :cheers:

I'll have to post up some outdoor pictures, the bumper application is much more noticeable in the daylight and the flat black is a nice contrast to the gloss.

Hey i ended up taking my emblems off and scuffed them up, primered, painted, and cleared them (numerous coats)...they looked awesome, but after i put them back on the 4runner, the paint started chipping away after a couple days...I did buy the clear plastidip, but just wasnt too sure on it. So having a white vehicle, is the black plastidip safe to use while the emblem is on the 4runner or did you take them off and then sprayed them?

I had bought some adhesive to put the rear emblem back on and that was a b***h to put on.

Hey i ended up taking my emblems off and scuffed them up, primered, painted, and cleared them (numerous coats)...they looked awesome, but after i put them back on the 4runner, the paint started chipping away after a couple days...I did buy the clear plastidip, but just wasnt too sure on it. So having a white vehicle, is the black plastidip safe to use while the emblem is on the 4runner or did you take them off and then sprayed them?

Completely safe, the excess peels right off the paint.

When I painted the grill I removed it and masked because I only wanted to paint the chrome sections. For the rear emblem, I just masked off about a 5 x 6 rectangle. Just spray it on over everything then peel off the coating from the paint. The mod is completely reversible.

I actually took both emblems off and put them on a piece of cardboard to paint them. They are both easy enough to get off I felt better about doing it that way. So far, so good and I've washed with a pressure washer a couple of times and neither have any nicks or anything on them.

AW MAN! i wish i would have seen that awhile ago haha...i took off the rear toyota and 4runner letters thinking i could paint those and put them back on....then i was thinkin to myself...this is going to take a looooooooong time to scuff, primer, paint, and clear and also how i was going to get everything to line up. then i just tossed them away lol cuz i didnt want to deal with it. but that plastidip looks simple enough. thanks for the link!
