platic engine cover

Modern cars have a plastic cover for the engines, like our 4runners do. What is the purpose of the plastic cover if any. Does it help dampen the engine noise a bit. Sure doesn't help keep it clean.

Decoration; Toyota can pimp their engine.

Makes the engine compartment look neat and tidy.

Other than that, no reason for it.

Seems like they are doing it now so that manufactureres can just run all of the needed plumping and wires where ever they want to. It looks like a train wreck under there. I prefer a bunch of well engineered chaos over a giant cheap looking slab of plastic.

Ehhh, I'd rather see the plastic "engine cover" decoration instead of engine plumbing. These engine are reliable and robust so it's ok if they want to cover it up. In Lexus engine compartments, if you open the hood, you can't see the engine. All you see is black plastic. Apart from decoration, it's is sound deadening as well.

I'll give you that it might have some sound deadening properties. Beyond that it is rubbish. I enjoy engines, and rebuilding them. When I or a friend get a new car, first thing to do is pop the hood and take a look under the skirt to see what it is made of. :thumb3:

This engine covers says it is a V6... I'm not so sure. Looks like a steam engine or some type of reactor, or a fuse panel..

I think engine covers can be tastefully done. I like how our 4.7L have that little throttle body cover, its a nice touch... but that underhood pic of the Lexus just makes me cringe. I like being able to pop the hood and see if the belts are getting bad, fluid is leaking, ect without having to remove dozens of plastic clips to uncover the engine bay. Also for someone like me who likes to keep their engine bay clean, those covers are a pain to remove and replace when detailing the bay.

i agree, with the 4runner it is not so bad, because just the engine is hidden.

I don't mind the simple engine covers like the newer 4runners have. Personally I find they clean up the engine bay (without going too far) and give it a modern look and best of all they're easily removed and left off if you don't like em.

That Lexus is a bit much for me tho, but in all seriousness, they are marketed for the type of people who don't care what's under their hood. I could see a Cadillac having a similar engine bay.

LOL...I agree with this. Somethings not right if the only way to tell what engine it has is by what the cover says. I mean hell, give me an intake manifold or some plug wires or something.
