i bought a 1988 4runner with a 22re engine the person who owned it before me supposedly installed a new timing chain, i bought it right even though i was'nt really happy how it ran.
it would sputter when it idled and the rear rocker arms would clatter when i gave it gas.
i ran a compression gauge on it and a vac gauge , i detirminsd that an exhust valve was hanging up.
i went to pull the head and found two of the cam lobes were flattened out and i had two bad rocker arms.
when i pulled the head and had it checked out i had bent and pitted valves.
i replaced the head, the cam and the bad rockers, lined up the timing marks and put the engine togather.
the problem i had was i could never get the timing right, either it was too far advanced or it was too far retarded ( i did this by moving the distr. one tooth on way or the other.
then somebody told me about lining up the bright links on the timing chain, so i ripped the engine apart again lined up the bright links however this time i noticed i can turn the crank pulley from tdc to the 5 degree mark without turning the camshaft thi seems like a alful lot of play to me, any suggestions ?
