So tonite I was bored and out by myself ( I know not the right thing to do ) looking for spots to play a little in the whopping 4-5" of snow we have

A few things I've noticed.... I am on a paved road and put it in 4lo ( diff. not locked ) and was able to drive on the pavement and turn , hop the curb , go up about embankment to get into the field , I just thought that was pretty nice compared to other's on 4lo that you cant do that with. ( never did have to lock the diff ).

Once in the field I went down a deeply rutted embankment about a 8 foot drop. I realized I could not go any further unless I wanted to drive through brush. I decided to back up the embankment. It was cool , the VSC kicked in soon as I started spinning a little and it just slowly walked me backwards up the rutted , snow covered embankment. Yes it did loose power , but kept the power at just enough to walk me out without a spin. Pretty cool I thought , because the basic point is to keep you moving and it did just that.

On the way out I locked the diff. ( still in 4lo ) just to test it out. The center diff. locking disables the VSC/traction control. So I was givin it hell for a short distance , I could hear the Atrac kicking in and felt like a good 4 wheel roost. After that I unlocked the center diff. and went on the trail back out to the road and once again was able to go out on the paved road and turn and drive to the side of the road without any of the bucking you get from a normal 4x4 thats locked in 4lo.

I try to do these little goofy things because I feel its good practice and since the 4R has a 4wd system unlike alot of trucks and unlike anything I've ever owned compared to all my other 4x4's I've owned. I feel it will give me a good education so when I off road and can use the trucks ability to the best of its ability.

The 4R amazes me every time I try these little tests. I feel this truck is a very off road capable vehicle. I'm running stock except for up sized 265/70 Revos.

My just .02 on a boring,cold,Wisconsin evening.

I def agree. I went out on the night it was snowing, monday night, and went to a construction site which was next to a field, which will become the parking lot for a new Pauly Toyota and Super Wal-mart. Needless to say the field was frozen. It was before 8 inch deep mud, which surprisingly i never got stuck. Anyways, i was out in the field bouncing around, and then went on this path, which turns out went into a creek or something, which I didn't notice until i heard alot of scraping. Anyways, I couldn't go forward, so i was already in 4HI and center diff was locked and just reversed out and did a turn so i can get back on the road. anyways it turns out i was up to the running boards in mud and snow, my friend who has a Heep Liberty was really impressed and has a new respect for our 4Runners. Now the pics of where i was ALMOST stuck. The tips on here really helps me, a novice, control the vehicle like a pro. Almost crashed into an arrow sign. turns out that under the 4 inches of snow was a smooth, very slippery ice layer. With the help of the 4Runners system and me the driver, stopped a foot away. Spiffy. Ok so long thoughts over. Now pics.

^Ignore my friends behind, he was picking up some rocks, right as i was taking the pic, i was just showing what i was scraping against.

^They say hi. lol. Back on the main trail.

Well i hope I didn't venture TOO far away from the main topic. Sorry.

You guys get all the fun. There's no local trails to test my 4runner. I have to drive 3 1/2 hrs to go play in some snow.

LOL.... There are not many places local here at all. I was kind of making my own to test it out......ok and play :)

I wish I had a partner , to do some of this with. Hate doing it by myself. ( ok that didn't sound right ) Another person with I truck , any type , kinda a bummin around wheeling buddy in case I get stuck or ????

I need a set of add'l light up front and some in the rear too.

Exactly xUSNavy and Falls... no place near by to go wheeling and snow is a few hours away. I want to take my truck and go romping through the snow, but I need a buddy with a truck as well to pull me out when my truck bites off more than it can chew.

Whenever I hit the resorts, I drive off on the shoulder to get half the truck in some snow or drive over piles of snow that just been plowed in the lots.

Folks who live in the snow, don't know how much I wish I could get just a bit of it here. I wish I lived in Denver.

You do?

Many of the neighborhoods are rutted out with huge ice flows and there are places on many streets off of the mains where only one car could pass at a time on a two way street.

I've got my brand new 4Runner in the garage and am driving the Toyota 4 x 4 pickup.

Twice a week I take the 4Runner out on the hwy's and main arterials for breaking 'er in.

There's a lot of damage to folk's vehicles with all the intense snow storms and ice formations.

Nice photos!

While I have a 4x4 Toyota 4Runner, I don't think I could ever do that to it. The thought of dirt all over my precious baby would make me chicken out.
:bash:

I have only used my 4x4 once or twice in snow, and it performed flawlessly. Fortunately, we don't get a whole lot of snow here in VA - but a "wintery mix" is in the forecast for Sunday night.

Even though I do not "off road" with it - save for rare snowfalls or taking a dirt road up to the Cub Scout campsite with my son - I drive with it in "4 HI" once a month or so, just to keep the parts lubricated and the cobwebs out.

P.S. Now I am down to less than one year of time remaining on my 4Runner's lease. I'm gonna miss it, but have my mind set on getting a 2008 Ford Mustang GT (mid-life crisis!) next January.

Jeff, thats what its made for ...... mine is lease too and I go everywhere with it...... gotta love it.

As far as the Mustang goes , try to buy a used one , they hold no resale value , let someone else take the hit. If you can by a Cobra or that Shelby Cobra , it will hold its value much better , not to mention really put a grin on your face. I've been involved in late model Mustang hot rodding for about 10 years the retro look is already is wearing off on John "Q" public already and thats whey the resale is dropping.

Just a couple of thoughts from a late model Stang owner. I might sell in spring and get a Vette. ( talk about drop in resale value ...lol) I will buy one a few years old so I don't have to eat crow on it.

It's one of those things, you desire it cause you don't have it. But once you get it, you'll want something else.

I'm sure if I lived in Denver with all that snow, I'll wish I was in sunny weather and rather be in a convertible. When I'm shoveling and plowing the driveway to get out, I bet I'll let out a full arsenal of vocabulary, @$#%)(*. :p

Sounds like a great time Falls, I just got back from a 5 day trip to the U.P. for our annual snowmobile trip. First time towing with the 4R (2 sleds), first time driving with the new Revo's on and first time driving in some "real" snow conditions with the 4R. Great reviews from me on all of the above. While I can hardly walk after putting 500+ miles on the sled, it was a pleasure to get in the 4R for the drive back to the cities. I look forward to trying some of the experimenting you have done in the next few weeks. I have some hunting land that I can experiment on...

I know......but still; I hate a dirty vehicle, even if there is good reason for it to be that way.

Well, I have owned three GTs in my younger days. I had a black '88 that I bought new, a red '93 that I picked up when it was a year old and a white 1995 (last year of the 5.0L) that I factory-ordered. I had to sell it in 1998 when my son was born.
:bash:

I swore to myself that I would someday get another one, as I just can't get the sound of a Mustang exhaust note out of my head. My son is 8 now, and I don't absolutely have to drive a four-door vehicle all the time.
:awais:

Sure, the Mustangs hold nowhere near the resale value of a Toyota product and Ford has gone through its share of rough times. However, I think the Mustang GT is a solid car and has a good reputation for durability. I also just love the new "retro" body style. A guy at work bought a new 2006 and it is awesome - save for having a slushbox transmission. Make mine a five-speed!

I'll probably lease a new one, but would consider a used one if I could get a very good deal on it and knew it was not abused. Even the used '05 and '06 GT coupes are selling for $25,000 to $26,000. I can get a good deal (27k to 28k for a well-equipped new one) through Costco's buying service and then lease it for 24 months with the option to buy. That would make for a very low payment, as opposed to buying it and paying 5 years of interest.

Since it will not be my "daily driver" and I have a paid-for Nissan Sentra for commuting duties, I don't have to worry very much about exceeding the mileage limit. {same as with my 4Runner}

No dice on the Cobra or Shelby. You're talking some serious money there - not to mention the insurance hike or the enhanced possibility of racking up unwanted tickets. Ouch!

Yeah, nothing like a new '07 Z-06 Corvette to get the blood pumping! If you find one, be sure to post some pics.

Good night to all.

A C5 , 04 Corvette is what I would be going for .

I have a Blown 03 Cobra convt. that is really fast and pushing about 520 hp at the flywheel so I know what you mean about insurance and tickets. Honestly even at 44 y/o I have a hard time controlling myself in it.

The new retro style stangs do look nice and and are actually a great value modern day muscle car 300 hp at the flywheel is no slouch.

Funny thing is the old GTs you mentioned above are bringing pretty $$$ now. Especially a nice clean fox body GT.

Maybe I'll have different opinion after I do a test drive on 1 , but dropping me 220 hp might give me the jitters....lol
