I have a 2008 4Runner, SR5, V6, approximately 52K. I purchased it about a month ago.
Thanks to all the wonderful information on this forum, I've tackled much of the maintenance needs.
Today I drained and filled my transmission for the second time. I followed all steps to a 'T' as outlined by 'Fortech' in the sticky - and I really appreciate that detailed description.
When I first drained the fluid - almost exactly 3 quarts of fluid came out. Which is what most posters are saying comes out. I refilled the transmission with about 3.5 quarts, and followed the outlined procedure to check the level. My truck entered the Temp Check Mode with no problem, and I opened the overflow and performed the procedure during the specified parameters (AT TEMP comes back on at approximately 115 degrees, starts to flash at 130degrees). I was expecting 1/2 quart to come out, but not that much did - and I waited until there was a 'small trickle', actually until it almost stopped. That was about a week ago.
This morning I did the service again, and about 3.5 quarts of fluid came out. So I refilled the transmission with about 3.5 quarts of new fluid (a bit more). I went through the steps and entered Temp Check Mode. It took about 12 minutes for the AT TEMP light to come back on, it is a little chilly here this morning. I opened the overflow plug, and waited until I had a 'small trickle' - actually more like a drip. I even put the plug in, waited about 30 seconds, and opened it again - there was just a very small trickle.
If I add up what I put in, and what I got back out - again I'm at 3.5 quarts, not 3 as it was initally. Before entering Temp Check Mode I start the truck, and run it through all the gears a few times, pausing at each gear. I then shut it off briefly (1 minute maybe) while I jump the OBD connector, then start it up and go through the procedure to enter Temp Check Mode.
Has it been your experience to put more than 3 quarts of fluid in (about 3.5)? Seems like if 3 quarts came out, that's what should be in there. But I can leave the overflow plug out the whole time between 115 and 130 degrees, and still have 3.5 quarts of fluid when I drain it.
