Hey guys,
I am looking for a cheap winter vehicle and I have a friend with an 89 4runner in ok shape that I can get for free. The only problem is the engine is pretty much gone. I think the rings are toast. I looked around and it seems I can find a remanufactured motor for around 1100-1300 + shipping. Do you think its worth it to pick up the truck and do the motor swap? I think the truck has a little over 100k on it. The body is in good shape. The only other thing I know is wrong is the steering is leaking fluid but thats an easy fix. I am a pretty good mechanic so doing the motor swap and such is something I can do. Please help.

I'd say yes... Give it a new engine, drive it all winter, and if you don't want to keep it, and you've done a good job of giving it TLC, you'll get every dollar out that you put in. I think you can probably do better than that price, though, to get an engine for it.

Others can probably chime in with better info, but here are some ideas...

1) rebuild it yourself...
2) buy (at an auction, or classifieds) a cheap 'yota with a good engine, and hoist it out of the donor vehicle. You may be able to get a post-accident vehicle for cheap that will have all the parts you need.
3) buy a rebuilt from a shop

I don't know which one of these will be cheapest for you, but make sure you investigate all of the posibilities.
 
I was looking at www.22re.com, they have a remanufactured longblock for $1195. It doesn't sound too expensive to me for a longblock. I would rather go rebuilt/remanufactured over junkyard just so I am not taking a chance at getting a lemon. Does it sound like a good deal? Timmay!!!
 
This is just hearsay, but I've not heard a good deal of good things about 22re.com You'll probably do better from a local shop.
 
Yes the 22r or 22re are great engines been in Toyotas for a long time my 90 4X4 pickup had the 22RE and I beat the hell out of it.

Not allot of HP but bullet proof.

like someone said before if you dump $1200.00 into it drive it for a while then sell you will get more then what you put into it back.

How can you lose. and something tells me you will keep it.

My wife wanted to get rid of hers to get her Highlander and you see who has it now.:D

I rebuilt mine....

I just rebuilt my 22RE from my 87 runner. New Crank, New Connecting Rods, Cylinders honed, Block acid dipped and I spent just under 500 bones. Runs like a top now. I would recommend rebuilding you'll learn a ton about your truck. And then once it's all done you won't want to give it up.
