PLEASE HELP!!! Undercarriage Damage???

Hello forum,
I know this is a noobie question but last night I was very inebriated (emphasis on very) and was driving buzzed(I know, bad mistake, wont happen again), while driving I made a DUMB DUMB-DRUNK-COURAGE DRIVING MOVE, I drove from one parking lot (which was at a driveable incline) to another elevated one at an angle with my 03 4runner, at the top of this angle was those 6 inch high parking bumpers. When I hit the top, the middle of my 4runner went "CRUNCH SCRATCH CRUNCH" and I just floored it and cleared it.

My question is do you seasoned 4runner drivers think that there was any damage to my undercarriage?

If so, besides the skid plates, what extent and what can be hurt under there from what I detailed? (exhaust system? etc?)

(The car felt fine going home, no lights lit up, but god speed for my 4runner.)

if it's driving fine then that's one good sign. next thing to do is in the morning, check for visual damages and do a quick inspection to see if it's going to be an issue (mechanical/electrical). if it's just sheet metal that got banged up then it's no biggie.

sounds like you should be fine though but i'd do a detailed check.

good luck

Well if it bugs you enough, take a flashlight and go look underneath.

Given the desing of the 4R, you probably didn't damage anything, maybe just banged up your skids and scrtached some of the rail, etc below. But as Lance said, do a proper inspection. I dont think you should worry too much apart from the fact that you drove while buzzed.

I really hope so. I have no sympathy for you. It's unfortunate that you didn't total it. Hopefully next time you will (without hurting anyone else).

There is a tank protected by skid plate right in the middle. You probubly bent and scratched skid plate, do not sweat that, it happens all the time on the rocky trail. Your 4-R is fine, it's designed to take that kind of abuse.

I drink like once a year... and said it was a DUMB DUMB MISTAKE. Wont happen again.

Anyways I'd like to really thank everyone for their responses, it was greatly appreciated.

well you could have killed someone so im glad to see it's only your truck that's damaged. next time i'm sure you'll think twice about drinking and driving.

Drinking and driving once a year is once a year too much. You're in So Cal. So am I. If I'm on a jury when you get caught, I'll do everything I can to make sure you never see the outside of a prison again.

Lighten up Frances.

Morality issues aside, I would watch for leaks under the belly after the rig has sat for a few hours(let the oil drain back down into the sump).

Frances?

Like hell I'll lighten up. The punk should be tossed away never to see the light of day again. This isn't a morality issue. Why on earth would you think that? It's a safety issue. He drives in So Cal. I drive in So Cal. My loved-ones drive in So Cal. I don't want them to end up dead because this of a JERK like this. This is a one-strike issue, IMO. But, if you really want me to "lighten up", just quit replying to me.

Well, FWIW, one of the worst accidents I ever saw was in a grocery store parking lot.

Some young bimbo was driving through the parking lot at probably 45-50 mph, she ran a stop sign, and T-boned a minivan causing it to roll, and slam into some other parked cars. Very serious injuries.

I can understand Faeylyns anger.

Especially as a motorcyclist, I don't want to be mowed down by some drunk moron.

No sympathy here.

Read carefully please, I said I drink like once a year, not DRINK & DRIVE once a year like it was a routine.
I am honestly sorry for anyone Ive offended but the last time I drove intoxicated was about 15 years ago and this year will be my last.
I wanted to be honest so I posted the whole story.
I didn't know I'd get this response, I can understand how you feel, its why I apologized.

For the other responses, luckily there is no oil and I checked under the carriage and seems to be no big damage besides scratches. All the input has helped.

faeylyn - i a sure that you have never done anything wrong - you are probably perfect. in the event that you are not perfect - shut your cakehole.

if you prefer to live in a society that punishes first offenders with lifetime jail sentences, it is a shame you missed out on saddam's regime, it would have suited you. there is still hope though, in turkey drinking and driving is punishable by death.

where'd you get this info? everything i've seen says turkey takes you 20 miles out of town and makes you walk back under police escort.

el salvador i believe executes you by firing squad.

I have never done anything that has put anyone else's life in danger. It's interesting that so many people are coming to his defense about this. This isn't a trivial matter. People die every day because of this. Do you want to trade places with one of the dead just to defend this action? Or maybe it hits too close to home? Am I putting a cramp in your Saturday-night-out-with-the-boys style?

If this has caused him or anyone else to think a second time before getting behind the wheel drunk, it was worth it. He apologized. I'll move on if you will.

Really? Nothing ever? Have you ever exceeded the posted speed limit? If so, couldn't an argument be made that the potential to put someone else’s life in danger existed?

Have you ever done anything illegal?

It's interesting that so many people are coming to his defense about this.

I don't think it's that so many people are coming to his defense as it is people against your harsh words. It almost sounds as if you'd like to see someone who drives drunk put to death. People make mistakes.... we're all human... even you. BTW, I've never driven drunk. In fact, I don't drink at all. I never have and never will because I grew up with an alcoholic father. So I'm not sympathetic because I've been in his shoes. I obviously haven't.

This isn't a trivial matter. People die every day because of this.

True. People die every day for a myriad of other reasons as well. How do you feel about someone who drives when they are too tired/sleepy to drive safely? Should we lock them up forever and throw away the key?

If this has caused him or anyone else to think a second time before getting behind the wheel drunk, it was worth it.

I seriously doubt that your words here will make anyone who is intoxicated stop and think again before getting behind the wheel. But if you are correct, then great.

My point here is simply that people make mistakes. Some with more serious consequences than others. Life is full of risks, in almost everything we do. Unfortunately, dealing with a drunk driving is just one of a million things that could get any of us killed. There's really no need to be so incredibly harsh about it.

Didja know that driving in a sleep-deprived state renders you just as dangerous as a drunk? Same thing goes with cellphone users and the idiots who drink a Coke and eat a burger while driving down the freeway. Or read the morning paper. Or watch a movie on their DVD player with the safety sensor disabled.

Worst accident I ever witnessed was a mother who turned to check on her her baby, took her foot off the brake and drove into oncoming traffic. The ensuing crash killed a 9 year old girl in the other car.

No, I don't exceed the speed limit. No, I've never done anything illegal. But, I suppose if I ever left my house, I would be putting someone else's life in danger. Actually, just by living, I'm putting other's lives in danger. Because I exist, others have to deal with me. The FedEx guy delivered a package the other day. Maybe next time, he'll get into an accident all because he was delivering a package to me. If I had never existed, he wouldn't have died. But this really isn't the same thing, is it?

This isn't about a mistake. This isn't about an accident. This isn't about the daily risks we all take by just being alive. It's about a selfish and ignorant act that can and does lead to the death of thousands of people. Same thing goes for someone who is too tired/sleepy. If someone is too tired/sleepy to drive safely and they cause the death of others, they should be prosecuted for manslaughter.

How about a taxi driver who picks you up from the airport? How about a bus driver? Is it a simple mistake if they drive drunk/tired/sleepy? When they get into an accident that kills someone, the dead are just as dead.

I can't see how anyone can be casual about this. "That's okay, simple mistake, can happen to anyone, don't do it again, too bad about your runner, post some pics!" These aren't simple mistakes. They are crimes.

But you are correct. I was a little harsh.

If I were king of the world: For a first offense where no harm was caused to people or property, license revoked for 5 years. First offense where property damage to someone else's property occured, license revoked for 5 years plus compensitory and punitive damages. Any second offense, license revoked forever. Any third offense, prison time. Any harm to others, jail time. Death to others, life in prison for you.
