*Please help with my 98 4WD :(*

Hi Guys
I have a 1998 limited 4runner and i cant engage h4 and the button is not responding(No light). The strange thing is that my 4L engages and my rear diff works.
I was thinking it was my VSV or (broken vacuum line) but don't know where to start, I am a newbe so please go easy on me

I have attached pics of the VSV (i think) may be they are connected wrong :confused:
(the blue arrow is coming from the manifold)

Another thing is that the (green) hose just hags there. Is this right????

In the 4runner is the 4WD shifter suppose to be in H for everyday driving???

Yes the truck should stay in 4H with 4WD disengaged for everyday driving. Shifting to neutral will get you nowhere, literally. I had a similar problem with mine when I first got it, but it turned out to be a dirty electrical connection inside the lever itself. I just put the truck in neutral with my foot on the brake, and shifted the lever back and forth a few times while also clicking the 4WD button on and off. I haven't had any problems since.

Sorry man, but that's the extent of my experience with that problem...I actually took it in to the stealership and had them check it out too, but they said there was no problem, just a dirty connection. $100 later...they were right!
 
are you sure H4 doesnt work? or do you just think it doesnt because the green light wont come on? if thats the case thenjust drive forward or in reverse for a little while and it should come on.

When you push the button are you suppose to fill the 4WD engage? Because when i push it the light does not come on and i cant fill anything :redbrick:

Nope, not instantly. On my truck, I usually have to move anywhere from 1-5 feet in either drive or reverse before it engages. Sometimes it engages before I move, but sometimes not. I usually don't feel or hear much upon engagement...but I usually feel it disengage.
 
The gears are probably not lined up in the transfer case. Push the 4WD and do a shuffle. Try to drive truck on something off camber or put ramps on opposite tires on the axles just to make sure its engaging. Sometimes my 4Runner does this queitly and sometimes it clanks and bangs. Sometimes I hear the actuators going, sometimes I dont.

The thing i don't get is that my 4L engages but 4H will not. :shrug:
 
Well, lets see, if your 4L engages, its because its mechanically shifted while the 4H is actuator shifted. Problems could be with: Actuator, 4WD switch, wiring, possibly fuse (if fused), vacuum lines. I'd check the fuse box to eliminate that, then crawl under the rig and locate the actuator on the transfer case and clean the connector and check the vacuums if it has vacuum I've never bothered to check on my 02.
 
Toyota recommends shifting into 4H once a month or something like that to keep the actuator from "sticking", or so I've heard and read. Like one poster said, sounds like it could be actuator related or electrical.
 
If the fuse checks, try banging the actuator with a 20lb mallet! I joke! Hit it with a rubber hammer and test voltage with an Ohmmeter to check if its getting power.

LoL, I'll try anything JK. I'll try Hitting the actuator with a rubber hammer and test voltage. I'll let you know how it goes.

tried hitting it didn't do anything:nono:, I don't have a Ohmmeter so i used a test light to see if there is any power going to the actuator and the light was very dim. and didn't matter if the 4WD button was On or Off.

I also checked 2 plugs for power & the blue one had no power, is this right?

Question:: when you push the 4WD button what is suppose to happen?
(light?Noise?)
