my 96 4runner has this annoying ticking sound. only happens when i let off gas, or at idle. when idled up it stops. if anybody has an idea i would love to hear it.

Whilst warm? Cold? Does the ticking increase/decrease with vehicle speed?

First thing that comes to mind is an exhaust manifold gasket leak.

Mainly when warm. Completely stops when I accelerate

does it sound like it's coming from behind the driver's side dash? I have this noise at idle too. Curious to hear suggestions...

I know the 22RE's have an infamous valve tick which only occured when decelerating and could be heard at idle, how many miles?

it does sound like its coming from drivers side. i have the v6 in it and 301 thousand miles. i tried to tighten the exaust but it is all tight. i couldn't feel a leak anywhere around the gasket. i'm just stumped, and going crazy!!
