Please help-UPDATE- Problem fixed

Hello all,
I have researched all previous threads and have come up empty handed.
I have a 1994 with the 3.0 v6.

Engine ran very well when I bought it last month. It needed new valve cover gaskets and spark plugs.

After I finished putting the top back together the engine has problems now.

#1- Idles at 300 RPM
#2- Blows black smoke out of the tail pipe to the point it burns your eyes.
I can put my hand in front of the tail pipe and it is a black soot with lots of condensation (no Smell).

I thought it was a TPS because I could wiggle the sensor a bit and the engine would idle normal with no black smoke. I put a new one on and nothing.
Still smoking black and using fuel like crazy.

Check timing for the low idle, and just because you replaced the TPS doesn't mean anything, it has to be adjusted correctly. Here's a good write up about adjusting it Toyota 22RE Throttle Position Sensor it says it's for the 22RE but it also has the 3VZE

Did you adjust the tps?

If it happened after you changed the valve covers, then re trace your steps. Make sure everything it on correct. Spark plug wires all going to the correct plug?

I installed the TPS and made slight movements and nothing changed.

I did trace my spark plug wires and they are correct.

Did your valve cover gaskets seat properly? Open the oil filler cap and see if there is any change in the idle quality. Did you have a bad pcv hose and have a crack in it?

I did gap the NGK plugs.
Replaced the PVC and rubber grommet.
one of the hose barbs from The little plastic valve that runs from the charcoal canister to the top of the throttle body broke. Would that matter ?

Also noticed at idle the timing was at 0, moved it to 10.
RPM picked up 100 rpm.

Blowing black smoke - are you getting a code? Some useless/usefull info...if the engine coolant temp sender goes, it sends bad info to everything, creating black smoke and shut off symptoms.......long story short, it shuts down every fkn thing if it's bad. We're talking a $25 item that can stop a $$$$$$ rig in it's tracks.

A lot of people go a little more advanced than the factory recommended 10 degrees, I'd go 12 personally, 15 max. Should increase power/performance a little bit, sure did for me. If you do advance it though, watch your temp gauge close for any higher-than-normal readings and also listen very close during acceleration for a pinging/knocking noise - those are signs of detonation and if you do experience any of those retard that timing back ASAP. Advancing it more isn't going to fix your situation but this is just more of an fyi for when you get her figured out :thumb:

A little update,
I had a friend who was a certified Toyota mechanic for 10 years, but it's been 12 years since he has worked on any Toyota.
We pulled the everything off the top end again to check for vacuum leaks, and found one wire to the TPS that was broke, we repaired the wire.

Now I have a good idle, yet it still runs super rich. He's stumped himself. I will try the Temp sensor.

UpDate -Problem fixed-- Thanks

I replaced the MAF- Runs great now.
The Old MAF tested good ? but it wasn't.
Thanks to everyone who chimed in.
