Plugged Oil Ports?

Hey all, brand new to the forum, apologies if I make any mistakes.

I have a 2nd gen with a 5VZ swap. The factory second gen gauge sucks so I went ahead and purchased an aftermarket electric gauge. I have all the parts just needs some advice before I take the plunge.

From another thread on here I saw that the 5VZ *may* have some extra oil ports that are plugged from the factory but I wanted to confirm as I've heard otherwise aswell.

Are either two of these viable to run that gauge? They were pretty stuck so I wanted to double check before I work to get em out. Thanks!

Easiest thing to do is buy the adapter that is metric and threads into the block. With an American 1/8”NTP fitting for a aftermarket gauge.

Search my posts, I did this and mounted the gauge in the engine compartment.

Looked through your threads, glad to see that this will work.
I did already pick up a 1/8 NPT adapter so Im good there.

Does it matter which of those two ports I use for the gauge? Thats mainly what I wanted to make sure of

I just used the port the low oil pressure switch was in.

Did I miss the answer on if there is any difference between the two plugged ports ? I added an electric sensor to the easiest port to access from below. ( left in my image).

I get the following readings ...

1. Cold at idle about 80 psi reducing to 28 psi when hot.
2. When hot , and under throttle , seems to go to 90 psi then I think the pressure limiter kicks in.

Its a little hard to tell, but that might be pre-filter and pre-cooler:

I’m in agreement. Until this guy I had the highest hot oil pressure of anyone that answered my post at a whopping 8psi.

I think those two ports are pre main oil galley. The pressure switch is plumbed into the main oil galley that feeds the crank.

You can see the pressure switch in the picture. I Tee’d into that port.

It would be interesting to see if the plug he circled directly under the oil pressure switch is directly connected to the PS.

Each of those plugs is machining access to an oil gallery of some sort. Imagine a cylinder extending some depth into the engine from each of those and you can tell where they go. You just don't know what else intersects them and which direction the oil goes through them. Oil galleries 'later' in the oiling system (smaller passages) are sometimes plugged with pressed-in ball bearings or similar instead of a threaded plug.

I finally ended up installing it after saying screw it to T-ing off the original sensor. It seems to work just fine, and notable is the plug on the right is like half an inch below the port for the factory sensor.

On cold start I get 80-85 PSI (which is weird cause I thought that the limiter was at 80)
Idle I get Like 11-12 PSI
around 3200-3500 RPM i get about 35-40 PSI.
I believe all those numbers look fine?

Figured I'd update the thread in case anyone was still curious
 
Where did you mount your gauge?

Mine is still in the engine bay.

Haven’t gotten it mounted yet, had to get it done in a day to go on a long trip. But I routed it through the driver side on the firewall and pulled power from the fuses right there (in the 2nd gen atleast) using some circuit expanders. It’s currently just lodged between the dash and the A pillar where a gauge pod would be
 
Better Late Than Never Oil Temp and Oil Pressure Sensor Mod

A little late to the party, but here is where I added oil temp and oil pressure sensors to my 2002 4WD with 5VZ.

I removed the passenger side tire, spray skirt, and oil filter to get access.

The before photo, shows the two 8mm hex plugs previously discussed.

The red circled plug is on the oil pump body.

Based on the oil pump diagrams this plug seems to share a passage with pressure relief valve, so this may be why using this port is sometimes a no go for oil pressure sensors... Seems to work for others, :shrug:

The green circled plug is on the block just below the stock oil pressure sensor with the red arrow.

The green circled plug was not to hard to break loose on my rig, and I sprayed it first with penetrant.

I found it was easier to remove from below, with an 8mm hex head on a 3/8 rachet and it bled 1-2 ounces of oil.

Next I removed the stock oil pressure sensor: this was more of a pain than the 8mm plug below it... The stock sensor takes a 24mm socket / SST 09816-30010, but I used a crescent wrench.

With these pieces removed, I tried to clean up the threads of both opening as best I could while still keeping debris out of the engine.

A 3/8 BSPT male to 1/8 NPT female adapter was used to add the temp sensor to the green circled plug, with plenty of Permatex high temp thread sealant and two full turns for each fitting. The adapter was installed first, then the sensor added to the adapter.

I added the stock sensor to the tee in the vice, with a good coating of high temp Permatex sealant, giving the sensor a full 2 turns. FSM calls for 11 ft-lbs for stock sensor, I opted to count turns, hopefully it works out.

Now for the tee installation into the block: I wanted to have the aftermarket oil pressure sensor facing out and down as shown in the after photo.

THIS TOOK 2.5 TURNS!

Should have gone with initial 1.5 turns, and luckily the port did not crack.

The stock wiring harness barley reaches the sensor, and the release tab is oriented around ten o'clock, I would try to line this up with the release tab at 6 o'clock if I were to do it again.

Added the aftermarket oil pressure sensor, idled for five minutes, no leaks.

Test drive 24 hours later, no leaks.

Have not finished the gauge install, but tee / sensor part is done.

Time will tell how it stands up...
