I know there are several threads out there on extended warranties for the T4R.

I'd be curious to see by the numbers how many avail themselves of the warranty versus how many do not.

Your poll response will be posted anonymously.

Thanks in advance for your participation.

I bought the 7 year warranty in October of 2012 for my 2013. I was worried about all the computer controls and electronics.
Have not used it in 5 years. No problems, no issues. It's a Toyota.

I bought one of the Toyota ones through the dealership, because I was told it was refundable if you never have a claim once it’s up. I just had to be careful because it had coverages the regular warranty does not (hotel room if stranded) so I wouldn’t want to waste my chance of a full refund over something stupid like a free hotel room.

Interesting poll. I just got the 20K service flyer in the mail yesterday and included was an offer for a 2 year extension of ToyotaCare for $329.00. Not sure if it is worth it since I'm getting a decent amount of mileage early on in the life of my Runner (over 18K in 5 months). Curious to see what others with the high mileage/young vehicle combo have done.

Well it is an extended warranty. If something happens to catastrophically fail that costs more to fix/replace than the cost of the warranty you came out ahead, if it nothing fails after 7 years, well you paid for it seven years ago, and for the most part you know you bought a good build.

As "reliable" as Toyotas are mechanically, I have zero compliance for that level of trust in all of the electronics they are packing in. Mine has already mostly paid for itself (just turning 4 years), I just had a failed backup camera replaced to the tune of $700 and change. As a comparison I could have replaced it myself for $350ish.

I personally go with my instinct, if I think I should get and extended warranty on something I do, if not I don't, it has worked well so far.

Pretty sure OP is talking about actual repair warranty and not ToyotaCare service, as in oil changes and other interval maintenance.

If I was stock I would buy it as piece of mind as if anything major goes it’s covered. Now that I am modded. Aka lift. I’m worried if I try to file a claim they will deny me due to mod. Certain things I can understand like axles or boots as the angle is more aggressive. But engine trans transfer case and diff are my major concerns if there is a failure

Toyota makes $$$ off the warranties or they wouldn't sell them. Odds are, you will lose more than you make. However, if you are risk averse, and want to control potential out of pocket repair, then go for it.

And FWIW, when I reviewed the extended warranty I was considering from Toyota in 2012, there was no buyback for a full refund other than before 60 days IIRC, and a prorated refund with a admin fee after 60 days.

I know GM gives a full refund on extended warranties if you never have any claims under the policy. If Toyota offered that, then it would be a pretty good option as long as you remember to ask for the refund in a timely manner (with GM you have x days after the end of the term to be eligible). My parents had the extended warranty on their Denali and never used it. Luckily I made them aware of the availability for a refund shortly before the time expired, putting $3k back in their pockets.

with my mileage per month i was going to get a 8yr/125k mile platinum warranty for ~$1400, but ultimately i decided my geico mechanical breakdown insurance (7yr 100k mile) is enough for my peace of mind to cover something major because it costs much less (total over 7 years is about $400 for me, although it does have a deductible unlike the platinum plan)

it really just comes down to your personal preference, if the cost isn't too much of a burden for you and you want peace of mind, go for it

Years ago I had a 7 year Geico MBI policy for my Acura Integra. The one and only time I submitted a claim, for a faulty AC system (which was always problematic with that vehicle), they denied the claim saying the part wasn't covered. Left a pretty bad taste behind.

I'm no longer with Geico...switched to Amica years ago, but never had a warranty policy since then...on either my 2002 Explorer (Eddie Bauer, V8 4WD) or my current T4R.

I love the T4R and am a low mileage driver but hope to keep it ten years or more as I typically do with my vehicles...which is why I am considering the extended warranty.

my policy now doesn't exclude A/C, and i read a lot of reviews from people saying their claims were easy before i decided to keep it. i also like that i can use any shop.

maybe it's changed since you had it or the policy is different where you are

The only time I bought an extended warranty was long time ago for 96 Ford minivan. It was long time ago I don't remember exact numbers but I paid something around $3000 for it and got repaired 3 times under warranty for total about $1200. Since then I figured that they won't sell extended warranties unless it's price is higher than repairs cost. . Back to 4Runner, I didn't buy any extended warranties, my truck is over 7 years now and the only thing I replaced so far is a park neutral switch (cost me under $200 I think) .

You of course might be especially unlucky and really need some expensive repair so it's up to you if you want to take a risk, those warranties give nice peace of mind, but I think chances are you'll never need it or you'll really need it when it expires : )

haha, growing up ford bought back our windstar because they got so tired of repairing it under warranty

I am not an extended warranty person for anything, be it a Toyota or an appliance.

I passed on it on the 2012 FJ Cruiser I used to own and it was a good thing, as I never even had a warranty issue related repair on it during the 4.5 years I owned it.

Did not even consider it on the 4Runner.

I’m typically one to opt out of warranties but my credit union offered a 100k extended warranty for $600 on my 16 4runner. I decided to give it a shot for a little extra piece of mind.

I have a 2012 Limited and purchased a 7yr/100K extended wty (Platinum w/$0 ded.) through Toyota (not the dealership) in Apr 2012. It cost $795. I have 90K miles on my vehicle and have used the wty three times:
1. Replaced door driver lock actuator (~$350)
2. Replaced X-REAS suspension due to leak (~$3300)
3. Replaced rear liftgate struts (~$450)

Prices above are dealer repair costs - no doubt the repairs could have been done cheaper, but I don't do that myself so the ext wty has been a good investment for me. Still have about 10K miles and 16 months before it expires.

I bought the seven year - 100,000 mile all inclusive warranty on my 2013 when I bought it used with 28,000 miles on it.

Now at 81,000 miles. Have never had to use it. Since there is so much new fangled electronic s on it I thought the extra insurance was worth it.

I will probably still be driving it at 200,000 miles --> and hope to never need it.

I just purchased the 5 yr / 100k Platinum. I don't usually do extended warranties but with so many electronics and computers these days, I'd be hard pressed to DIY any of that stuff and costs can add up fast.

I had to pay off my truck to qualify for a home loan so a one time payment that was just a bit more than my previous monthly car payment made it an easy decision.

So, 1/3 (33.33%) of the respondents thus far have the extended warranty, and only 10% of those with the warranty have had to use it.

Small sample size but hopefully others will contribute further data points.
