I am surprised there were so many sales in 1997. I don't personally know anyone with a 97, I don't think.

With the emphasis this forum places on buying a 99+, I imagine that after we get some more votes the 96-98 numbers will fall behind even moreso than they already are.

Gotta remember that a 96 is 20 years old now! Crazy to think about how many of them are still kickin at that age.

I always figured new models come out as technology advances, however, looking at the sales numbers, it would appear that new redesigned models come out when they determine that the sales are insufficient. I wonder if that translates to other makes and models as well? May be a good indicator of impending model changes if you can get hold of accurate sales data.

Model changes are based on a life cycle a lot of times too. Like 6 years or so. Sales can be great but if the design is old they might still change it up.

It only makes sense to change something if sales are dropping.

I bet if you look at 1st, 2nd, and 4th gen sales you'd see the same thing.

Initial sales a little low, climbing to a peak in the mid years, dropping for a couple years, then the next generation.

If you look at this chart the correlation holds true all the way to present. So as long as gas is cheap and the economy holds lots o them w/b sold. When both go south the sales really go south, e.g. 2009. :cowboy:

That seems to be the case now as well, with companies like twitter, snapchat, pinterest valued in tens of billions... The more things change the more they stay the same.

Oh and best year for a 3rd gen is 2000 because it's the millennium edition!
