I have a 2010 4runner sr5. I'm running around 17.2 to 17.5 mile per galon combination of both city and frequently hwy, is this normal?

How many miles are on it? Mileage should increase slightly once you get a few thousand miles on it.

17 around town is normal - you should see 20+ on the highway - Try resetting your mpg at every fill up - also try it when you are on the highway to see what you are getting then. I miss my 99' that used to give me instant MPG's, always entertaining watching the 5.9L drop to 1 or 2 MPG when pushed to the floor!

has 6800 miles on it. I didn't do any other modification on the car. I read on the forum and some other people said they're getting around 20 to 22 miles per gallon. I took a road trip and i calculated that i'd get around 20 miles per gallon free way only. sinced i owed the car i've used chevron gasoline only. what could be wrong with my car and why other people cars getting better gas mileage than mine

It is highly dependent on the driver, speed that you cruse on the highway, and geographically where you are. Everyone who lives where they mix varying amounts of ethanol can expect to see noticeable differences in mpg... I hate that stuff with a passion...
Being within 10% of what some are reporting is well within the bounds of normal. Nothing is wrong with your truck, your gas, etc. Try cruising 5-10 mph less then you normally do on the highway and you will likely be in the 21-22mpg range.
Driving habits
In another thread, many people posted their milage. Most people agree on around 16 mpg city give or take 1 mpg. Highway driving is different. If you are in a relatively flat area, you will get much better milage than hilly. Also, if you do alot of stop and go and step on it, the MPG will go down. If you are going 70+ you will also take a big hit. However at 60mph, around 20 mpg is typical in none hilly areas.

I guess I dont have a lead foot! My mileage seems to always be the same both calculated and according to the MPG display. Even a recent trip of 1,200 miles at an average speed of 81 MPH I get and got 20.8 to 21.7 MPG. When I take off from a stop I try to keep the economy level in the safe zone.

I have had my 2011 sr5 a little less than a month and have 2500 miles on it. I do a lot of highway miles and was hoping for an overall average of 20mpg+
I get about 16-17 in town. If I keep it at 65 or so on the highway, I can get up as high as 22-23. When I run closer to my typical speed on the interstate of 78...I get from 19-20 mpg depending on wind, hills, etc. So for me I have to decide if its worth the extra 5-10 bucks or so to get to my destination 15-20 minutes earlier.

I had the same concern when I got mine. Look for my post and replies.
in short, after about 6000 klm to 8000 klm, reset your reader buy holding the reset button. You will then have the average consumption in about 2000 klm. you should note that the computer keeps track of all your mileage and associated consumption. So after a few week of off reading trip, your millage will look really bad even when you return to the city.
