Poor man's DRL Disable

Okay so for some of the later 3rd generation owners (01-02 models I believe) have been plagued with the more complex DRL system than 99-00 owners. All they had to do was unplug a fuse and their DRL's were disabled, but the 01-02 owners still have to splice wires and stuff of that nature. So I searched every possible way to get around rewiring the fuse box and I found a solution. Here's how I got to it:

A couple months back, I was sitting in my other car (Acura RDX) waiting outside a store with the engine on but the lights turned to the off position. My Acura has HID projection headlights, but its high beams also serve as the DRLs, just with a lower wattage running through them when the high beams are not on. The car was sitting on a slope, so I put the parking brake on and turned the car off because my friends were taking a while to get out of the store.

When I turned the engine back on, I noticed that the DRL's did not come on. I was psyched because I thought they had just disbled themselves automatically, but in fact, the parking break must cut the power to the DRL's when it is engaged - the DRL's came back on as soon as I released the brake. So I figured I would try it on my 4Runner, and it worked!

Essentially, all you need to do to trip the circuit is pull up the parking brake lever one click - I am almost certain that this does not engage the parking brake (at least mine, since I know it's very loose and goes over ten clicks to reach the highest setting - normally it should only be 6-7). I noticed no decrease in mileage or the feeling of the brakes being slightly on, and it keeps the DRL's off without interfering with any of the lights. It's worth a try if the DRL's have ever bugged you.

Note: The (!) light will come on your dash, but that is normal (like I said, the brake is not even being engaged)

You can search on Yotatech to be exact, but I think it was the black wire with the yellow stripe under the dash.

I would strongly recommend you find a better way. The (!) light on your dash is there to alert you of a problem with the brake system such as low brake fluid level, not just to tell you the parking brake is on. I have read the drl mod for your year and it's very easy to do

From Yotatech:

Procedure:
Cut the Pin 12 Black/Yellow Stripe wire to disable the DRL "circuit"
operation. A switch can be installed inline between the two separate Black/Yellow Stripe wires for manual DRL operation if desired.

This is all you need to do. Cut and tape them off. It really takes 2 minutes to do. Easy as pie. Your method should be named the "lazy man's DRL." :D

Exaclty! Poor only applies if you can't afford a mod. If there's no cost involved and you're just taking a shortcut to achieve a result, then that's just laziness :D.

Like others have said, do it right and just cut Pin 12- Blk/Yel wire and tape off the exposed ends. Once you've done that, you're good to go.

Man I just got pwn3d... although I will admit I am relatively lazy.

But yeah anyways, thanks for the info on the wire, I'll get to that tomorrow hopefully

why do you wanna disable your DRLs? i love mine!

DRL's take away my free agency. If I want lights during the daytime, I just turn on the headlights! :happy bda

Side note: Those of you with 01-04 Tacoma's, DO NOT CUT THE WIRE MENTIONED ABOVE!! (ask me how I know. ) Cut wire 1 (green/white)

Sorry to bring back a super old thread, but would someone mind pointing me to which wire I need to cut? Hopefully with a photo? The images on this thread no longer work, so I have no idea what location he was referring to:

2002 4Runner: DRL Disable With On/Off Capability - YotaTech Forums

Yesterday I cut the only black/yellow wire I found under the dash(which I realized right after I cut was paired with a yellow/black wire), with no effect. DRL's still on. It was part of a cluster just to the left of the OBDII port.

All the threads I pulled up on this topic had everyone saying it took 30 seconds to locate and cut, so its gotta be right in front of my face, but I already screwed up once by guessing...
