Poor Ratings on the 03 4runner bumper tests!

I also think that Trucks/SUV's do not need to have 5 mph bumpers like most cars do.
Also, I have a silly question. I would love to have light/push bar on the front of a 4Runner (when I purchase one), would that effect the air bag sensors in a front crash?
If the metal does not give enough and the air bad senors are not triggered to go off because the metal took most of the impact, is that defeating the purpose of them? It does not seem safe to me. Yes, you would be saving your front end, but you would still hit the steering wheel or such and the air bag will not deploy to help you out.
Any thoughts on this

you'll want to get another opinion, as i don't have a new 4runner with air bags, but i'm pretty sure that the sensors in the 4runner (and most new vehicles) are deceleration sensors rather than impact sensors. so you should be able to get away with putting something on your bumper. even if it is a impact sensor, i don't think it will be a big deal if you put something on there. if it's a small enough accident to not set off the sensors, then you don't want the airbags going off, if it's a big accident, then the light bar isn't going to do much anyway.

Yes, most new vehicles have "decellerometers" for airbag ignition. The problem with impact sensors like "first generation airbags" was that airbags would go off in very minor fender benders.
The front brush guards, light bars, etc won't affect the airbags. I don't like them, but you can use them. In fact some brush guard makers advertise they are "airbag compatible". Really, if you stuck a bicycle on the front it would be "airbag compatible".

Not sure about those bumper guards either because I've seen those get into minor fender benders and boy it caused some major damage!! I'd say for the ultimate protection, go with the steel bumpers.... unfortunately nobody has any of em...

In short the Kia Sorento got an acceptable, worst out of all of them and the Honda Pilot and Infiniti FX35 had recalls issued to upgrade the airbags to deploy faster

Yes, good crash results, poor bumper. If you look at all the mid-size SUV's most bumpers are poor. The only good bumper was a Chevy Trail Blazer while the crash results were Marginal. I guess I would take good crash results over a poor bumper.

I agree; however, the IIHS raises a valid point: Why don't these vehicles have bumpers that will protect the car? How hard can it be?
After hearing about this on the news Friday night, I went out and looked at the bumpers on my new '04 4Runner. They offer NO protection whatsoever for getting clipped at an angle
