Popping Sound When Turning

I have a '97 SR5. For a few months now, entirely intermittently, there has been a popping sound coming from the front end when I am turning. Hard to describe, but it sounds like a metal against metal "ping" or pop, as though something is caught for a split second, then released.

I have no idea. Dealer could not find it.

Any ideas?

Find another mechanic, one that specializes in NVH (Noise, vibration, harshness) problems.

It could be lots of things. Bad bushings that mount the steering rack, bad steering rack, Bad balljoints, bad front CV-joints, etc.

I'd probably lean towards bad axle shaft CV-joints.

If it is when you have the wheel turned all the way one direction it is the steering stops. all you need to do is put some greese on them.

Axles are more of a grinding sound.

The '96 and newer 'Runners don't have that problem. Different design than the '86-'95 'Runners.

Bad CV-joints can, and do make popping sounds when turning, if they get bad enough.

However, as I said, find a good mechanic that specializes in NVH. Because there are many possibilities.
