Portable Air Tank with Portable Compressor? Stupid idea?

I recently purchased a Portable Air compressor from the local auto part store. I was wondering, is it possible to connect it to a portable air tank, such as this:

This year I will be doing a lot of fishing on the beach, I will need to be airing down my tires, it's about a 15 minute drive along the beach to get back to the parking lot to air up my tires.

What I want to do is be able to turn the compressor on to fill up the tank while I'm driving back to the parking lot in order to save time, instead of just using the compressor by itself, is this even possible?

Since it's a lighter socket, looks like you'll have to either manually plug in the device when you're coming back or add a switch to the outlet.

Does the device have a pressure cut-off? Most don't so you could overfill the tank (although it'd take forever). With the right fittings, this should be possible though. You may need a new line to connect this compressor with the tank.

I honestly haven't done one that way, but the old 4runner didn't have working A/C so we converted the air compressor to an air pump. Works great and REALLY fast.

Will this setup have a regulator? .... guessing not.

Google "12v air compressor with tank". You can buy something designed to do what you want.

For the auto fill function you're looking for, you'd definitely need a regulator and you could throw a pop-off safety valve in there while you're at it.

I know you just bought this compressor, but you can get 12v compressor systems that are complete...then you could simply dismantle the "system" and place the pieces anywhere you want. Puma makes a great 12v setup.

Thanks for the responses, if it was up to me, I wouldn't have purchased this compressor, I got it as a Christmas present from a family member.

I'd go and buy a 10 or 15 # CO2 tank, 150# regulator (fire extinguisher store) and a hose kit from the hardware store for your needs. You get to refill your tires about 8-10 times, but if you use the air stations, you can obviously make one bottle last longer.
