Portable jump starter

Anyone try this portable jump starter?

I saw it on Amazon and want something for emergencies. If anyone has a better suggestion I would appreciate it.

I have a Noco GB40. Want to pick up another one, or a GB70, but living in Hawaii, Amazon won't ship lithiums now..
 
During one high school summer, working at Domino's Pizza, I had been given the Harbor Freight version. When my alternator went out, I had to use my portable jump starter in its place for a few weeks until I could afford to replace it! Naturally, this burned out the jumpstarter's battery eventually, but between charging it twice a day from nearly dead and using it to power an entire vehicle for several miles during the commute each way, it was definitely worked harder than ever designed!

Long story short, which ever version you get, consider them very useful! Sure, it probably doesnt completely replace good ol' jumper cables. But as long as you keep up with charging, and store it somewhere it doesnt get stepped on and broken, it should take care if 99% of your jumping needs, and you won't have to bum a jump off anyone!

One caution: for the long term, most of the non-lithium ones aren't technically designed to crank directly from the jumpstarter. You are really supposed to let the jumpstarter charge your vehicle's vattery for a few minutes, and then crank after disconnecting.
 
I have had one of these from Antigravity for a few years now and it has worked fantastically when I needed it. This I believe is the closest current model to what I have now:

Just for reference, I have used it several times to jump-start things:496 MAG HO V8 in my friends 25' Cobalt boat twice in one day when he had a dead starter battery. We also use it to charge devices when I don't want to put a draw on my own house battery on the boat when we aren't running the engine. It holds a charge for a very very long time even when you don't use it for a while. And considering it has enough horsepower to start a motor as big as a 496 8.1L, it should be absolutely fine for our T4Rs (even though I haven't had to use it on my truck yet thank god!).

Same here. It gets more use charging electronics than jumping cars but it has been used for that a few times since 2014. It's a nice thing to have for some peace of mind also. The newer ones are smaller as technology gets better but I imagine they are just as good.
 
I have two of these from different manufacturers. Be sure to check the charge level about every 6 months.
 
I have one of these. Thankfully haven't had to use it, but I was curious...

do you guys keep them in the car 24/7?
 
I have a couple of the NOCO chargers...the 7200 which I use to charge my AUX battery when my truck is at the house because I run my fridge/freezer 24/7.

For jump starting, I can jumpstart my cranking battery w/ my Aux battery with the National Luna System, however I do carry a NOCO GB70 at all times also..
 
Whatever you get, simply no plausible reason I can think of to not go with a lithium chemistry based product. Size, weight, recharge times, all seem far more superior than lugging around a 30lb lead acid chemistry style brick.

I "always" have something, apart from when its charging. :)

I'm not sure what others do, but I use this mostly for my boat, and I definitely have it with me every time I am out. I have a dual battery setup but its been great for piece of mind and for my friends boats occasionally. With that being said, it is in my truck most of the times but not always. I don't venture off the beaten path too much though.

Taking it out in the boat makes sense. I definitely take mine whenever I go off the beaten path. I was more curious if people just leave them in their car, and how often they charge and check on them.

For some reason, sensible or not, I feel weird leaving it in the car during the dead of winter and summer. The swing seasons don't bother me, but something about sub 30 and north of 100 makes me kind of nervous about having it sitting in the car all the time.

So you peaked my curiosity. I keep a Gb40 in my truck, I let a coworker jump his explorer just before Thanksgiving, I fully charged it after that. My truck lives outside, it has been there under the seat until 5 min ago. Just checked the meter 100%, I plugged it in to charge, no pulse, meaning the battery is at capacity 100%. So we live in the same area you know how cold it has been up until about a week ago. If that's any help.
 
I keep a gb40 in my truck too,
Same deal, 2 boosts a couple months ago, and pack still shows 100%

I learned a while back that a big benefit of lithium ion batteries is their performance in very cold weather.

I have only had it since august. I charged it and threw it in the truck and literally forgot about it. My lent it to my coworker, I checked it, it read 100%, at the end of Nov, he used it with out issue.

I keep a sunwayman t20cs 650 lumen torch in my truck that has been in there since I bought it in 2013, I have recharged the 18650 li-ion cell once so far, it was a maintenance charge, it wasn't depleted.

I have two units in my car --- an Anker 600A peak unit and an Everready 400A unit. Both turn over my 3.2L passenger battery just fine. (Note: I picked up the ever ready unit on clearance from Walmart for $9). Both have jumped my car on a nearly dead battery in 30-50F weather before I bought a new battery. The Anker unit seems better built, but the Everready does just as good of a job jumping the car.... so IDK. Also, I don't think Anker makes portable car jumping units anymore... not sure why.

I personally would go with a 600A unit with plenty of solid reviews that don't seem to be bought and paid for.

I've got a fenix rc11 in the truck :)

Those 18650's are so robust with temps
