What makes it portable, the quick connect power leads?
Looks like the Amazon reviews are mixed.
Main thing will be thinking through how much you might actually use a winch and in what situations. I know that is hard to measure, but thinking about the trails, frequency, and area you live/explore. I always worry about going cheap on recovery gear, not to say this item is cheap.

Cable on Portable Winch ?
Synthetic cable saves a lot of weight off the winch.

Those rubber tension cords won't do much in a 'serious' wreck.

I knew someone would chime in. They aren't rubber, it's a tie down, and it's REALLY tight. Plus, it's pulled against the bins. In a serious enough wreck, it will be a minor concern.

This meets the portable criteria and seems to be liked in the Land Cruiser world. Might be a little more work in the mud though if that's your thing.

JA50N, not this specific winch. Google searching & reading reviews led me to this one. With the minimal amount of use it would get, I can't justify the cost of a new bumper & the other added costs.
They make winch mounts that go in a hitch mount like on the rear of the 4runner. I'm not sure of a hidden hitch mount for the front of the 4runner though. Making quick disconnects for the power leads is pretty easy. Here is an example of what I did on the front of my GMC:

That way if I want to remove the whole winch plate I just pull 2 1" pins from the CUCV shackle mounts and slide it off. I leave the electrical disconnected until I need to use the winch so I don't have any minute draw.
