Possible 6th GEN 4TR in 2016?

In this case I don't think there's anything to worry about. The A76x 6 speed has been around since at least 2006.

The D4S in a 3.5L was introduced in 2007. The only change is adding variable intake valve timing and a bit of cpu tweaking on fuel timing to run atkinson cycle. The same program has been in use in other engines for a few years already.

For me - I wouldn't hesitate to buy based on the engine/transmission combo. It's all off the shelf stuff that's been pretty well tested.

Can't really make any comments about any of the rest of it. Now if they introduce something along the lines of the 2.0L turbo from the NX - then I might want to make sure it's fully sorted. I'd love to see a 3.0L v6 turbo just like the NX only a v6 - two twin scroll turbos, variable everything, atkinson/otto D4S, the works. That would be a fantastic 4runner engine IMO. 350hp, 350 ft lbs, 23-24 EPA mpg ratings should be doable. Pretty much tuner-proof though. The complexity of managing variable cycle options, two injection systems, mix and match turbo outputs, and the valve timing/duration, spark, fuel, etc is going well beyond the capability of most tuning shops.

You forgot to mention that it will also be available with a diesel engine. I'm sure the diesel engine, manual transmission, and brown paint will be the most popular version ordered by Jalopnik readers.

Not to worry. The 2VD-FTV is a diesel (imaginary 2nd generation of the 1VD-FTV with 4 liters - Toyota downsized it for the 4runner, but not to worry, it's still a twin turbo v8 diesel). Word is it will be moderately tuned from the factory with 275hp, 450 tq. :D

I think he was just pointing out this did not make sense on your previous reply.....you contradicted yourself...read it again below!
lol

What I was saying is that I wouldn't buy a the first year generation of a vehicle. I bought the second year which had one issue. I needed a new vehicle since I was changing jobs and would no longer be able to use the company vehicle other wise I would have held out a year or two more on the 4 door wrangler. The overall point I was trying to make is first year new generation vehicles usually have some wrinkles that need to be ironed out. Given what the OP's question was, I would feel better buying the last year of a generation than the first year of a new generation. Sorry if I caused any confusion.

??????

^ this and the fact that you are comparing purchasing a Jeep (any model/run) to a Toyota.

This makes more sense :)

It is true the the early "Bugs" on the 5th gen weren't a big deal, but the changes from the 4th gen to the 5th gen weren't exactly groundbreaking.

ASSuming the 6th gen is going to have that Direct Injection Atkins-cycle 3.5L in the Tacoma, and a new transmission, I would rather have someone else field test that drivetrain before I get my hands on it. For how conservative Toyota is, that engine is a pretty radical step in a different direction. I big part of Toyota's Reliability comes from their Conservativeness.

When you say Atkins(on)-cycle are you talking this?

or just the extended intake duration of the modified Otto Cycle? Because the modified Otto Cycle is nothing all that new and reliability should be status quo.

well I am going to add, we will be replacing the warden's 12 Tacoma with a 16 double cab limited.

just waiting for june this year to put in an allocation order for one with my Toyota dealer that let me allocate his 1st choice to me.

so I will get hand on testing with the new 3.5 and 6spd.

I'd love to see the 3.5 that's going in the taco shoehorned into the 4runner or a diesel (I know I know, neither is likely for 2016) It looks like the TRD parts will carry over... which is further evidence that we won't see any change for at least another year...

Hey guys, I've been trolling this site for some time now. Just bought my first 4Runner, 2016 TRD NITRO. What mods can I do to it to make it an off-roading monster? It's for my wife. Will 315's rub on 20 inch rims?

Naw, all you need to do is add a blower and swap the shifter knob and they should fit ;)

That 3.5L, and 6-speed Auto Trans that is going into the Taco is what we will be seeing in the 6th Gen. It doesn't make sense that Toyota would put anything else in there....I just hope they will release more details on the 2016 Taco before its release.

At the training I just went to the Toyota reps said that there no current redesign planned. Of course they could be in the dark.....but

a spammer? Um No. I went to a Tacoma training on Tuesday at the bay sox training. I will not give any input again then sorry. I just saw it popped up and responded.
