possible engine ping?

I was at a friend's house last nite. now while I was going home, I noticed that the tuppets were making a sound, something like a possible engine ping. I've only been using 87 on my V6 because the manual doesn't require anything higher (although 91 is recommended for better performance). Does anyone know if I need to put higher octane? I only have a little over 1k miles and this doesn't really sound good to me.

Bump up to 91 grade for one tank full, and see if the noise goes way. The knock sensor should advance/retard the fuel management accordingly, however, so you should not hear anything ever.

engine noise

except for the interior color, mine is just like yours, i have 3500 on mine now, but have no noise from the engine (but i have switched to mobile 1 in the engine). as far as gas goes, i have been experimenting with reg/high test. with high test i get 1 to 1

well i'll see if the ping will still pop up. only happened once so far but if it will persist, it should pop up on my 900 mile rountrip vacation today till friday. so we'll see if the switch from 87-91 is necessary. could be just extreme heat of Central CA. :(

Are you sure it wasn't a ticking noise? The V6 is famous for a ticking noise especially if you are driving near a concrete barrier or wall.

My 06 Sport V6 ticks, and is especially noticable when driving next to a wall or sitting at a drive thru. I run 89 min in my vehicle.

it wasn't. I was driving in the middle of the road. Only thing different that night from other nights was that it was a complete black out in many neighborhoods. Car got too scared or something??? :p

So far i haven't heard it again. Just came back from a 900 mile vacation and did not hear it a single time. Only thing i noticed (well could be because it's still new) is that the engine doesn't respond as quickly as i thought it would. I always have to shift it to 4th gear to get it to downshift when overtaking or when going up an incline.

Comparing that to my GX, well can't really do that cuz my 4r is only a V6 while the GX is a V8. The GX really gives the response you want or need in any situation. Hail to the V8's I guess! :awais:

Normally you will feel and hear pinging only when the engine is under stress(WOT, going uphill, towing). You will not normally hear it in day to day driving. Nissan engines are real bad about pinging going uphill with gas lower than 89 octane. Just step up the octane to the next grade if you think it is a problem.
