Possible HG Blown but Mechanic says otherwise

Hi Guys,

I have a question regarding my head gasket. I've searched for answers and I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. So here it goes,

I was on the highway and passing a logging truck when my RPM's were near redline and I heard a pop sound. I let off the gas and I kept driving. I didn't notice any change in performance or water temp. I ended up reaching my destination about 200 miles away and i let the engine cool. I checked the coolant level and found a small amount of oil like sludge substance floating on top the the coolant under the radiator cap. It felt like grease/oil. I drove home from my fly fishing trip and I noticed no change in performance or water temp.

I'm thinking it was my head gasket so I called my mechanic and he said to flush the coolant and it didn't sound like a head gasket issue. So after speaking with him I went and looked at my coolant. The overflow reservoir has a decent amount of this grease/sludge/oil in it. I'll post pics tomorrow when I can get some good light.

Has anyone experienced this or have an Idea of what may have happened? By the way the sludge is a off white/slightly gray substance.

I don't have much to help with but have you checked your oil? If it's milky then you definitely have some oil/coolant mixing going on.

Sounds like a head gasket leak to me....had the same issue with my 95 Monte Carlo.....

I don't think it would be a head gasket issue. Sounds more like a Cracked(Fractured) Block if you are mixing Coolant and Oil.

Is there a way to check if it's the block? How about if it's a HG? Besides the sweet smell in the exhaust. Where else would the oil/grease get into the coolant?

Did you check your oil like suggested to see if you have water in that?

I haven't had a chance yet. Hopefully today. I'm assuming I need to drain all my oil?

It should show on the dipstick. It'll be evident...looks like a milky sludge

I checked my oil dip stick and tranny dip stick and I don't see any sign of water. I think I'm going to just flush all my fluids along with a remote tranny cooler and see what happens from there.

Maybe it just backfired from redlining it (especially if you got some crappy gas). I was also thinking maybe the logging truck kicked up a rock while you were passing him and it smacked your truck and sounded like a pop?? If your oil looks good, coolant looks good (apart from that little bit of sludge you found), no studdering/missing, not loosing coolant, no white smoke or excessive water coming out the tailpipe, no loss of power.. then it isn't a head gasket/cracked head or a cracked block.
